Walter Powell

Powell scored a rare Murray State invite to the Scouting Combine, where he posted a 4.54 40-yard dash, a 31 1/2-inch vertical, a 10'00 broad jump, 4.23 short shuttle and a 6.70 3-cone drill. He worked out again at his March 18 pro day, improving his 40 time to 4.44 and his vertical to 32 inches. Powell was a football and track star coming out of St. Louis. He appeared in all 11 games as a freshman, catching three passes for 16 yards and a touchdown. He followed that by starting eight of 11 games in 2011, catching 45 passes for 584 yards and five touchdowns. Powell started 10 of 11 games the following season, setting new single-season school marks for receptions (94) and yards (1,213). With defenses keyed in to stopping Powell in 2013, he still managed a team-high 66 catches for 837 yards and 13 touchdowns.

strengths

Coordinated footwork with light feet to burst out of his cuts and stay balanced in his movements. Has some shake to him and will make defenders miss with shifty moves. Improved route runner with the acceleration in his patterns to sell his route and change gears. Led team in receiving last three seasons and was a team captain as a junior and senior.

weaknesses

Skinny body type with lean features and average height. Only average-at-best straight line speed and can be caught from behind by defenders. Decent hand size, but will have his share of drops, due wavering focus, running before securing. Quicker than fast, but lacks suddenness to consistently create separation.
