11/11/17 - Justus Reed forced a fumble from quarterback Matt DeSomer, scooped up the ball and ran 21 yards into the end zone with 1:44 left to seal Youngstown State's 28-20 victory over Southern Illinois on Saturday. With Youngstown State leading 21-20, Penguins' quarterback Hunter Wells led a 12-play, six-minute drive, but the drive stalled when Zak Kennedy missed a 43-yard field goal attempt with 2:55 remaining. Reed sacked DeSomer five plays later. Wells threw a pair of touchdown passes to Damoun Patterson in the second quarter to give Youngstown State (5-5, 3-4 Missouri Valley Conference) a 14-7 halftime lead. Tevin McCaster had 145 yards rushing and a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. DeSomer led Southern Illinois (4-6, 2-5), throwing for only 81 yards yet had 140 yards rushing, including touchdown runs of 58 and 1 yard. 12/17/16 - Hunter Wells fired a 6-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Rader in the end zone as time expired to lift Youngstown State to a 40-38 victory over Eastern Washington on Saturday to advance to the FCS national title game against James Madison. Youngstown State (12-3) started the winning drive on its 42 with 4:24 left in the game, and used up the clock as it marched for the score. Tevin McCaster rushed for 154 yards and three touchdowns for Youngstown State, which will be seeking its fifth national title. Cooper Kupp caught 10 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns for Eastern Washington (12-2), which saw its 11-game winning streak snapped. The Penguins will play for the national championship Jan. 7 against James Madison, which beat North Dakota State 27-17 on Friday. The loss broke North Dakota State's string of five consecutive FCS titles. Saturday's game was played in bitter cold, with the temperature dropping to single digits as the game progressed. - AP Sports
11/08/15 - Hunter Wells threw three touchdowns as Youngstown State rolled over Missouri State 47-7 on Saturday. Wells completed 15 of 25 passes for 241 yards for the Penguins (5-4, 3-3 Missouri Valley Conference). Jody Webb rushed for 107 yards and a touchdown and Martin Rulz ran for 100 yards and a score. The team amassed 644 yards in offense and held the Bears (1-8, 0-6) to just 107 yards. Wells threw three touchdowns in the first half, including a 72-yard scoring pass to Andrew Williams midway through the second quarter and Youngstown State led 31-0. Ricky Davis punched it in from the 1 on the team's next drive to give the Penguins a 38-7 lead at halftime. Missouri State's only score came with 42 seconds left in the first half on a 20-yard pass from Brodie Lambert to Zac Hoover. 10/03/15 - Hunter Wells completed 15 of 26 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns, including a 51-yard strike to Andrew Williams, to help Youngstown State to a 31-3 victory over South Dakota on Saturday. Williams finished with 79 yards receiving on four catches. Martin Ruiz added 86 yards rushing and two touchdowns for the Penguins (3-1, 1-0 Missouri Valley Conference). Defensively, Youngstown State held South Dakota to 262 total yards and just 10 first downs while forcing three turnovers. The Penguins led 17-0 at halftime and were never seriously threatened, extending their lead to 24-0 midway through the third before the Coyotes (2-2, 0-1) finally got on the board after a Miles Bergner 39-yard field goal. Ryan Saeger threw for 119 yards for South Dakota but completed just nine of his 25 passes with an interception. - AP Sports
