 Overview

The New Orleans Saints had one of the steals of the 2010 draft in tight end Jimmy Graham, a four-year basketball player for the Miami Hurricanes who stayed on campus to play one year of football. Thomas is looking to take the same route to the NFL after walking onto the football team last spring after playing four years of basketball at Portland State.

Also like Graham, Thomas had very little football experience even in high school, playing just one season before focusing on basketball.

However, at 6-feet-5 and 251 pounds, Thomas has the size and athleticism to warrant a mid-round flier in hopes of uncovering another Graham. The NFL is chock full of former hoops stars who have excelled at tight end, including perennial Pro Bowlers Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates.

Thomas impressed at the East-West Shrine Game and has the size and length to threaten the seam.

 2010 Season

Thomas, a first team All-Big Sky Conference selection in 2010, had 29 receptions for 453 yards and two touchdowns in 2010. It was his first year of collegiate football after playing four seasons for the Portland State basketball team.

 Draft Scout Player News
09/07/12 - TE Julius Thomas is the Broncos' only reserve tight end behind Joel Dreessen and Jacob Tamme. The Broncos made heavy use of two-tight end formations during training camp, so if injury strikes, Thomas -- who is still not 100 percent after undergoing March ankle surgery -- is the Broncos' only insurance.
09/05/12 - TE Julius Thomas is the Broncos' only reserve tight end behind Joel Dreessen and Jacob Tamme. The Broncos made heavy use of two-tight end formations during training camp, so if injury strikes, Thomas -- who is still not 100 percent after undergoing March ankle surgery -- is the Broncos' only insurance.
05/31/12 - TE Julius Thomas spent recent practices moving around the sideline in a walking boot after undergoing ankle surgery in late March. He is expected back for training camp.
04/12/12 - TE Julius Thomas underwent surgery to repair injured ankle ligaments. Thomas had been working out informally with QB Peyton Manning, but had dealt with ankle problems stemming from a severe high ankle sprain he incurred in Week 2 last season. Thomas will be ready for training camp, but his status for organized team activities, which begin in May, is up in the air.
