 Overview

Lester is a rising prospect in the SEC; he has not had the opportunity as an every-down back, partially due to Auburn's deep stable of talent at the position and partially because of his early-season academic suspension in 2007. But the backfield combo of Lester and junior Ben Tate could be reminiscent of the dynamic Cadillac Williams-Ronnie Brown duo from 2004, with Lester presenting a more physical version of Cadillac's "Lightning" role.

 Analysis

Positives: Explosive runner into the hole, and hits it hard. Used in one- or two-back sets. Stays on the hip the fullback and finds space to run. Can also read the linemen in zone blocking and finds space. Very quick feet, and can step through trash inside or sidestep tacklers to burst into an opening. Has some lean, keeping his feet moving after contact and runs over safeties at the second level. Always fights for the extra yards. Will run up inside or bounce to the outside. Faces up against linebackers or defensive ends in pass protection. Effectively cut blocks, as well. Willing to go downfield and throw blocks for receivers after they make a catch. Plays through the whistle. Potentially a very good kick returner because of his direct approach and tough running style.

Negatives: Only an adequate build, average in upper body and lower body strength. Questionable in short-yardage situations because of a lack of bulk (not effort). Doesn't have breakaway speed. Does not get a lot of chances to catch the ball, so he will need to prove he has the hands to contribute as a receiver. Committee of tailbacks at Auburn limits his productivity.

 Draft Scout Player News
03/10/09 - Auburn Pro day: The players worked out indoors on FieldTurf. Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff and Giants scouting director Mark Ross were among the player personnel executives in attendance. RB Brad Lester measured in at 5-9 1/2, 190 pounds. He ran a 4.55 and 4.52 in the 40, had a 38.5-inch vertical, a 10-foot, 4-inch broad jump, a 4.36 short shuttle, a 7.06 three-cone drill and 18 bench press reps. - Gil Brandt, NFL.com
02/06/09 - PRO POTENTIAL: RB Brad Lester -- Did not have a stellar senior season, but neither did anyone on the Auburn offense. Lester is big and fast, and could be better suited to the pro game. He's projected as a late-round, free agent pick.
10/29/08 - PLAYERS TO WATCH: RB Brad Lester couuld have a bigger role in the offense over the last month of the season. He carried the ball 13 times against West Virginia, his most rushes since the season opener against Louisiana-Monroe.
10/27/08 - Auburn's 20-play scoring drive marked the most plays in a drive by the Tigers since records began being kept in 1970. The previous long was a 19-play, 90-yard drive against Ole Miss on Oct. 4, 1985. The Tigers had their seventh third-down conversion with just over three minutes left in the first half, setting a season high for most third-down conversions in a game. But the Tigers had only two in the second half. Auburn led 17-10 at halftime. The Tigers have now led at halftime of every game and have outscored their opponents 105-36 in the first half this season. KEEP AN EYE ON: Coach Tommy Tuberville's search of an offensive coordinator. Auburn has gone through 10 offensive and defensive coordinators since 1999 (five of each), the most of any staff in Division I. Tuberville insists he will go outside his current staff for his next offensive coordinator. QUOTE TO NOTE: "My job here is to win football games and to be a positive example to 120 young guys. They watch how I handle winning and losing. It's tough. It hurts. As hard as you work and knowing how many people are counting on you ... when you can't find the answers and you know they are there, that's what gets to you as a coach." -- Coach Tommy Tuberville. RB Brad Lester had only 37 yards rushing, but it was good enough for him to pass Curtis Kuykendall (1944-45) for 20th in Auburn history with 1,620 yards.
10/14/08 - Most of the Tigers on the injury list played Saturday, although RBs Brad Lester (knee) and Ben Tate (hamstring) were limited.
