Fangupo spent two years on a religious mission in the Philippines after high school and enrolled at Mt. San Antonio Community College (CA) when he returned to the U.S. He saw immediate action in 2007 on the defensive line, recording 24 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks, and in 2008 as a sophomore, finishing with 47 tackles, 15.0 tackles for loss, 6.0 sacks, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. Fangupo was considered one of the top JUCO recruits and chose USC over Arizona, Arizona State and Oregon.
He was a reserve defensive tackle in 2009 as a junior, but was sidelined most of the season with a broken left ankle injury and took a medical redshirt. Fangupo played in the first seven games of 2010 before another injury ended his season, recording four tackles.
He decided to transfer to BYU for his senior season in 2011 and started 10 games, playing end and tackle and finishing with 26 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss and two pass break-ups.
Fangupo had a limited career at USC because of injuries and decided to transfer after someone broke into his Los Angeles apartment when his wife was home alone. He took advantage of the rule allowing upperclassmen to transfer without penalty as part of the school's sanctions. He was told he wouldn't see much of the field at BYU, but impressed with his brute power and hard work ... the Cougars' coaching staff considers him the strongest player they've ever coached.
Fangupo is physically imposing with natural instincts and a good head on his shoulders, but has limited range and is more of a run stuffer who won't make many plays in the backfield ... a mid-round, older prospect who should be able to offer depth along the defensive line in any scheme.
Strengths: Possesses a girthy, wide-body size with a strong upper and lower body. Extremely strong with the raw power to overwhelm blockers at the point of attack. Anchors off the snap and holds his ground, staying stout in the run game. Has a coordinated frame to stay balanced on his feet through contact. Has very good awareness and always knows where the ball is, using his eyes to quickly locate and elevate his hands to knock down passes at the line of scrimmage. High character player on and off the field with top work ethic and a positive attitude ... very good teammate. Versatile player, lining up at both defensive end and nose tackle in BYU's 3-4 defensive alignment.
Weaknesses: Has seen his weight fluctuate over the years and it is something that needs to be monitored. Short in stature and doesn't have great length. Has limited range and doesn't have great lateral agility to move up and down the line of scrimmage in a flash ... won't make a lot of plays outside the numbers. Needs to clean up his technique and play with better leverage to consistently defeat blocks. Has some durability and conditioning concerns after missing most of the 2009 and 2010 seasons with injuries and doesn't look like an every-down defender. An older prospect and will be 27-years old when the 2012 NFL regular season starts.

Phil Steele All-Independent Second Team, FBS All-Independent Honorable Mention ... part of BYU rushing defense that was ranked 19th nationally allowing 112.08 yards per game and No. 14 total defense (312.9 total yards allowed per game) ... played in all 13 games and started 10 ... recorded 26 tackles, including six for a loss, three quarterback hurries and two pass breakups ... had at least 0.5 tackles for loss in the first five games of the season ... had six tackles and one for a loss vs. UCF while breaking up one pass ... totaled five tackles and 1.5 for a loss with one quarterback hurry and one pass breakup vs. Utah State.
