Tom Zbikowski Draft Scout Player News Log
08/08/10 - S Tom Zbikowski continues to fill in for Ed Reed with the first-team defense. He is starting over Ken Hamlin, who was signed this offseason. Zbikowski has been all around the ball this training camp.
08/01/10 - FS Tom Zbikowski is working with the starting defense as Ed Reed recovers from offseason hip surgery. With Reed expected to miss games early in the preseason, the Ravens must decide between Zbikowski and Ken Hamlin.
12/15/09 - S Tom Zbikowski has registered an interception in each of his two starts for injured Ed Reed, a five-time Pro Bowl free safety. He has seemed to validate the club's decision to invest a third-round pick in the 2008 draft on the Notre Dame product. "Here's a second-year guy that has done great on special teams," coach John Harbaugh said. "He's really been a force on special teams. He's had a chance to play defense, and he's kind of done it."
12/14/09 - FS Tom Zbikowski might start his third straight game if Ed Reed (hip) is sidelined again.
12/13/09 - FS Tom Zbikowski has made an interception in the past two games (both starts). He has replaced the injured Ed Reed, who is considered questionable against Chicago.
12/08/09 - FS Tom Zbikowski made the first start of his NFL career when Ed Reed (hip-ankle) was sidelined. Zbikowski is a physical presence but is a liability in coverage.
11/05/09 - S Tom Zbikowski (illness) returned to practice Thursday after missing Wednesday. He is expected to play special teams.
09/25/09 - SS Tom Zbikowski practiced for the third straight day after missing last Sunday with a concussion. He is expected to play on special teams and the dime package on defense.
09/24/09 - SS Tom Zbikowski practiced for the second straight day after missing last Sunday with a concussion. He is expected to play on special teams and the dime package on defense.
09/23/09 - S Tom Zbikowski (head) had a full practice and should return after missing his first game last Sunday. He is a core special teams player.
09/22/09 - SS Tom Zbikowski is expected to play after missing Sunday's game with a concussion.
09/21/09 - S Tom Zbikowski (concussion) was inactive against the Chargers.
09/18/09 - S Tom Zbikowski (concussion) did not practice Friday and is listed as questionable.
09/17/09 - SS Tom Zbikowski missed practices Wednesday and Thursday with a concussion. He is very questionable to play Sunday.
09/16/09 - S Tom Zbikowski (concussion) missed practice Wednesday. He has shown some improvement, but the Ravens may want to play it safe. Zbikowski is considered questionable.
09/13/09 - SS Tom Zbikowski suffered a concussion in the first quarter and didn't return. He is expected to play Sunday against the Chargers.
04/29/08 - A closer look at the Ravens' picks: Round 3/86 -- Tom Zbikowski, FS, 5-11, 215, Notre Dame - He fills a long-time void at safety, where the Ravens have gone two years without a quality backup behind Ed Reed and Dawan Landry. Zbikowski is considered a playmaker. He has the distinction of having scored on an interception return, punt return and fumble return during his career. Zbikowski slipped to the middle of the third round because of a poor senior season. He played out of control at times and missed open-field tackles.
04/29/08 - BALTIMORE RAVENS COULD SURPRISE: Tom Zbikowski, S, Notre Dame. A blue-collar worker, Zbikowski is a perfect fit for the hard-hitting Ravens defense. He will make an instant impact on special teams and could push Dawan Landry as a starter over the next few years. There's no questioning his toughness. Zbikowski is a professional boxer.
02/24/08 - Boxing in Madison Square Garden -- heavyweight fight, 6/10/06, knocked out Robert Bell in 49 seconds..."It was awesome. It was a good time. I trained so hard for it -- six or seven weeks. Then having 40 teammates coming to support me and another 60 from home, it was definitely one of the better experiences of my life." (didn't last long ...)"No, not at all." (laughs),(any ambitions of boxing more) "No, not right now. I'm solely focused on football and getting ready for this. And then once you get into minicamp and training camp, you've got to do everything all you can to make a team." ("not right now" mean you plan to continue with boxing) "There's always a possibility. I'm never going to take that out. But as long as there's football in my life, it's not going to happen." - NFL Combine Transcript
02/11/08 - PRO POTENTIAL: SS Tom Zbikowski - Rated as one of the top strong safeties in the draft, Zbikowski had 80 tackles as a senior and two interceptions. He ended his career with 299 tackles, eighth all-time at Notre Dame. He's been a big-play guy throughout his college career. He showed off his chiseled physique at the Senior Bowl, but to improve his draft grade (the third round being the high end), he'll need a good 40 time in further workouts.
01/28/08 - If Notre Dame safety Tom Zbikowski answered the question once this week, he answered it 1,000 times. NFL scouts and coaches -- "Pretty much every single one of them," he said -- were curious whether the Fighting Irish star planned to give up pro boxing for pro football. "I'm done with that," said Zbikowski, who was 75-15 as an amateur boxer and 1-0 after 49 seconds of his one and only pro bout at famed Madison Square Garden. "I'm here for a reason and that's to play football and that's it." Zbikowski packs a mean punch whether he's wearing shoulder pads or boxing gloves, holding Notre Dame's all-time record for tackles by a defensive back. He believes his boxing background demonstrates the nasty attitude needed to play defense in the NFL. "Boxing is a one-on-one sport and football is pretty much just a series of one-on-one battles," Zbikowski said. "It shows a mental toughness that you're going to go one-on-one with someone and not let them beat you. "That's why we're here -- to compete one-on-one against the best players and show what you can do." - Gareth Clary, Press-Register
01/28/08 - PRO PROSPECTS: SS Tom Zbikowski - Rated as one of the top strong safeties in the draft, Zbikowski had 80 tackles as a senior and two interceptions. He ended his career with 299 tackles, eighth all-time at Notre Dame. He's been a big-play guy throughout his college career, but to improve his third- or fourth-round grade, he'll need a good 40 time in workouts.
01/26/08 - Tom Zbikowski should thank Notre Dame buddy Jeff Samardzija if he gets any added exposure come Super Bowl Sunday. Zbikowski, the former Irish All-America safety, and Samardzija, the receiver-turned-pitcher now in the Cubs' organization, are two of 27 athletes featured in an ad for Under Armour's The New Prototype performance footwear. The one-minute spot will run during the first quarter of the Super Bowl. "That's huge in itself, especially with the amount of publicity the Super Bowl gets," Zbikowski said. "To have Under Armour want me in their ad is pretty sweet." It might be hard to catch a glimpse of all the athletes in just 60 seconds, but Zbikowski should be visible. On the set of the one-day shoot in New York, Samardzija gave Zbikowski a freshly cut Mohawk. "Zbikowski, with that Mohawk, definitely jumps out at you," said Steve Battista, vice president of marketing for Under Armour. "It's hard to believe he came to the set with a full head of hair. - Vaughn McClure, Chicago Tribune
01/22/08 - Notre Dame's contingent at the Senior Bowl includes safety Tom Zbikowski from Buffalo Grove High School, defensive lineman Trevor Laws and center John Sullivan. Tight end John Carlson had to cancel because he has had the flu for two weeks. As the prospects lined up for weigh-ins, a chiseled Zbikowski, standing 5 feet 11 inches, came in at 209 pounds. Zbikowski was scheduled to meet with the Bears and the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday night for interviews—a typical process during Senior Bowl week. - Vaughn McClure, Chicago Tribune
11/24/07 - Senior SS Tom Zbikowski goes into his final game with 290 career tackles, the most ever for a Notre Dame defensive back. He is tied for 11th all-time with the Irish and could get to No. 8. He needs eight tackles against Stanford to move up to that spot.
