Earl Mitchell Draft Scout Player News Log
08/18/16 - DT Earl Mitchell, who has missed the last two weeks with a calf injury, isn't likely to play Friday at Dallas, meaning the probable starting defensive line won't be intact. Mitchell, a starter last season, overtook second-year DT Jordan Phillips for the starting job early in camp after Phillips emerged from minicamp as the starter.
08/11/16 - DT Earl Mitchell (calf) is unlikely to play in Friday's preseason opener, meaning DT Jordan Phillips, the 2015 second-round pick who has been disappointing, will likely get the start.
08/09/16 - DT Earl Mitchell (calf) missed his third consecutive practice Tuesday. Mitchell is listed as the starter ahead of Jordan Phillips, last year's second-round pick from Oklahoma. Phillips hasn't yet established himself in camp after creeping up on Mitchell during OTAs and minicamp.
12/30/15 - DT Earl Mitchell (calf) didn't practice Wednesday and isn't likely to play Sunday, according to interim coach Dan Campbell. Mitchell has missed the last two games. Rookie Jordan Phillips would likely start for Mitchell.
12/25/15 - DT Earl Mitchell (calf) didn't practice Thursday and appears doubtful for Sunday.
12/23/15 - DT Earl Mitchell (calf) didn't practice Wednesday, meaning he could miss his third game in four weeks.
12/17/15 - DT Earl Mitchell (calf) didn't practice Thursday. Interim coach Dan Campbell said earlier in the week it was unlikely Mitchell would play this week at San Diego.
12/16/15 - DT Earl Mitchell (calf) didn't practice Wednesday and coach Dan Campbell said it's unlikely he will play this week against San Diego. That could mean rookie Jordan Phillips gets the start.
12/07/15 - DT Earl Mitchell (calf) missed the Baltimore game but there's a decent chance he plays Monday against the New York Giants. But Mitchell, a starter all season, might lose his job to rookie Jordan Phillips, who made a nice showing in the 15-13 victory over Baltimore.
12/02/15 - DT Earl Mitchell (calf) didn't participate in Wednesday's practice. It's unclear whether Mitchell will be able to play this week against Baltimore.
11/30/15 - DT Earl Mitchell (calf) left Sunday's game and didn't return. He's considered day to day.
10/08/15 - DT Earl Mitchell (back) didn't practice Wednesday. Mitchell has been battling the back problem for two weeks but didn't seem to have his play affected last week against the New York Jets.
09/30/15 - DT Earl Mitchell (back) was limited Wednesday. If Mitchell is slowed in Sunday's game against the Jets, it would be a big blow to the already underperforming defensive line.
09/24/15 - DT Earl Mitchell (back) missed practice Thursday due to a new injury. Mitchell has only missed one game in his five-year career.
08/27/15 - T Earl Mitchell is among the players concerned about Tropical Storm Erika, which could bring heavy rain to South Florida early next week, or, worse, turn into a hurricane and bring lots more trouble. Mitchell hasn't been through a hurricane even though he grew up in the Houston area and played for the Texans for four seasons. The Dolphins are prepared, however. Head coach Joe Philbin said they've discussed the possibility of leaving town so they can prepare for the preseason finale against Tampa Bay uninterrupted.
11/15/14 - DT Earl Mitchell had his second sack of the season vs. Buffalo. Mitchell, mainly a run stuffer, has been getting better at the pass rush.
11/11/14 - DT Earl Mitchell (abdomen) blocked a 42-yard FG attempt in Sunday's Detroit game. DE Dion Jordan returned it 55 yards. The Dolphins have now blocked two punts and a field goal. And Mitchell continues to be a consistent addition to the DL.
11/03/14 - DT Earl Mitchell, the former Houston Texan who has proved to be a strong free agent signing, had his first sack of the season against San Diego.
09/03/14 - DT Earl Mitchell will be watched closely vs. New England to see if he can match the run-stuffing ability of Paul Soliai, who he's replacing.
08/26/14 - DT Earl Mitchell is drawing rave reviews from practices and preseason games. Mitchell has excelled as the third defensive tackle along with Randy Starks and Jared Odrick. He's a sure tackler and takes up lots of space.
04/01/14 - DT Earl Mitchell was signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Dolphins from the Texans March 13.
12/26/13 - --NT Earl Mitchell, who's in the last year of his contract, continues to lead NFL nose tackles in three statistics - 45 tackles, 28 unassisted and 17 assisted.
11/20/13 - NT Earl Mitchell, who's in the last year of his contract, continues to play well, according to the coaches. Mitchell is quick and strong and fits well in Wade Phillips' 3-4 scheme. Expect him to re-sign with the Texans.
12/31/12 - NT Earl Mitchell rotates with starter Shaun Cody and has played very well. This is the last year of Cody's contract. He'll be 32. Mitchell will be in his fourth year. He's shown steady improvement and has made plays on the nose and at end when he rotates there. His versatility makes him more valuable.
11/12/12 - NT Earl Mitchell filled in for injured starting NT Shaun Cody (ribs) against Chicago and led the defensive linemen with four tackles, including three unassisted. Cody and Mitchell usually rotate, with each player getting equal playing time.
