Wake Forest used to make turnovers work in its favor. Not so this season, and that might be the biggest factor in a 4-7 record with one game remaining.
The Demon Deacons have only 14 takeaways on defense. They've given up 18 turnovers.
So unless there's a major change in that trend in the Nov. 28 finale at Duke, Wake Forest will have a negative turnover margin for the first time since 2001.
"We don't have big-play guys on the defensive side of the ball," coach Jim Grobe said.
That's a major change from last year, when Wake Forest rated fifth in the country in turnover margin (37 takeaways, 20 giveaways). In the 2007 and 2008 seasons combined, the Demon Deacons led the country with 72 takeaways.
Not only has the reduction in forcing turnovers allowed opponents to rack up more points against Wake Forest, but it has meant fewer opportunities for good field position for the Demon Deacons on offense. Wake Forest has recovered only six fumbles this season, which will mark the first time since 2005 that the team won't play in a bowl. The Demon Deacons take a five-game losing streak into the finale.
