09/03/17 - (QB) - A.J. Erdely, rJr, 6-3, 220
UAB needed a half to shake off more than 1,000 days of rust before pulling away from Alabama A&M 38-7 on Saturday in the Blazers' first game following a two-season hiatus. A.J. Erdely threw two touchdown passes and ran in another as the Blazers scored 28 unanswered points in the second half against the FCS Bulldogs, also playing their first game of the season. School officials shut down the UAB program at the end of the 2014 season for financial reasons, but it was reinstated six months later after a fundraising effort generated what eventually became more than $40 million in contributions. The Blazers then sat out the 2015 and 2016 seasons while rebuilding their roster. The Blazers were greeted Saturday by an announced crowd of 45,212, the largest in program history. UAB often played in front of home crowds of less than 10,000 before the temporary shutdown. And there was a true game-day atmosphere outside Legion Field in the hours before kickoff, something the program lacked while going through nine consecutive losing seasons. - AP College Football

08/16/17 - (DB) - Mark Williams, Fr, 5-11, 175
WR Mark Williams has missed several practices due to a lower leg injury, and will be out for some time.

05/05/15 - (WR) - J.J. Nelson, rSr, 5-10, 156
A closer look at the Cardinals' seven picks: Round 5/159 - J.J. Nelson, WR, 5-10, 156, Alabama-Birmingham...A speedster, Nelson ran the 40 in 4.28 seconds at the combine. He will contend immediately for both returner jobs. The Cardinals are deep at receiver but Nelson could make it as the fifth. - The Sports Xchange

05/05/15 - (WR) - J.J. Nelson, rSr, 5-10, 156
Coach Bruce Arians said receiver J.J. Nelson, a fifth-round pick, will be the fastest player he's ever coached. Nelson's 40-yard dash time at the combine was 4.28 seconds. Four or five years ago, Arians was at the Alabama State high school track meet to watch his granddaughter compete. He noticed a kid from Midfield High School was winning almost all the spring events. "My son and I go, 'who the hell is that?'" Arians said. "It just happened to be J.J. Nelson." - The Sports Xchange

05/04/15 - (TE) - Kennard Backman, Sr, 6-3, 243
A closer look at the Packers' eight picks: Round 6/213 - Kennard Backman, TE, 6-3, 258, Alabama-Birmingham...A four-year starter for the since-disbanded UAB program. Athleticism, sure hands down the field and versatility to be split out and play in-line gives Backman a shot to stick at a position that lacks depth. - The Sports Xchange

02/24/15 - (WR) - J.J. Nelson, rSr, 5-10, 156
2015 NFL Combine, 25 Takeaways: Five Most Intriguing Players: J.J. Nelson, WR, Alabama-Birmingham: Clocked at a blistering 4.28 seconds in the 40-yard dash, Nelson was the fastest of this year's combine participants. He looks more like a track star in shoulder pads than a traditional wide receiver at a spindly 5-10, 156 pounds, but caught the ball well during drills in Indianapolis. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com

02/21/15 - (WR) - J.J. Nelson, rSr, 5-10, 156
UAB WR J.J. Nelson isn't a well-known name and at 5-10 and 156 pounds, he doesn't have the size that will scare many defensive coordinators. But his 4.29 40-yard dash showed that he has the speed that defenses need to respect. Nelson also helped himself in the receiving drills, displaying sudden feet and easy change of direction in his routes, not having to slow himself at the catch point. His size obviously limits his next level role, but with four special teams touchdowns in 2014, he should be able to return kicks and punts while competing for offensive snaps. - Dane Brugler, NFLDraftScout.com

11/03/14 - (K) - Ty Long, Sr, 6-1, 206
Ty Long kicked the game-winning field goal with 3 seconds to play, giving the Alabama-Birmingham the edge over Florida Atlantic 31-28 Saturday night. Long's 24-yarder won it for the Blazers (5-4, 3-2 Conference USA) after FAU rallied from a 21-point deficit to score three fourth-quarter touchdowns and tie the game 28-28 with 4:03 left to play. Cody Clements completed 16 of 26 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown for UAB. Jordan Howard scored twice and ran for 167 yards on 35 carries. The Blazers dominated the first half, scoring on a pair of touchdown runs by Howard, another by D.J. Vinson, and a 78-yard pass from Clements to Jamarcus Nelson. The defense held the FAU to 46 yards total offense in the first half and UAB led 28-7 at the break. Jaquez Johnson threw for 177 yards and three touchdowns for the Owls (3-6, 2-3). - AP Sports

10/28/14 - (WR) - J.J. Nelson, rSr, 5-10, 156

Nelson went the distance for a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and also returned a pair of punts for 39 yards, including a 35-yarder, at Arkansas. Nelson had two kickoff returns for 127 yards and finished with 166 overall return yards. He has two kickoff returns this season for touchdowns and three in his career, a UAB record. Nelson is averaging 34.7 yards per kick return to lead Conference USA and rank No. 3 nationally. Nelson is also averaging a league-best 10.3 yards on punt returns this season and is No. 24 in the country. This is his second weekly honor in 2014 and Nelson's third career honor. - Conference USA football

10/13/14 - (WR) - J.J. Nelson, rSr, 5-10, 156
OCT 6 CONFERENCE USA SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: J.J. He now has three returns for touchdowns in his UAB career (two kickoff and one punt). This is the second time in Nelson's career that he has been named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week (Sept. 2, 2013). - Conference USA football

08/11/14 - (WR) - J.J. Nelson, rSr, 5-10, 156
2014 PRESEASON PAUL HORNUNG AWARD WATCH LIST: Jamarcus Nelson, UAB...As a junior last season, Nelson produced a career-best 42 receptions for 846 yards with eight receiving touchdowns as he was named second-team All-Conference USA. He had four games last season with more than 100 yards receiving. In the season opener last year at Troy, Nelson registered 367 all-purpose yards as he recorded 199 receiving yards and returned a kickoff return 97 yards for a touchdown. Nelson averaged 22.7 yards on 27 kick returns in 2013. - UAB football
