Previous 25 Boise State Notes Next 25 Boise State Notes
11/20/09 - (WR) - Austin Pettis, Jr, 6-3, 202
SCOUTING THE OFFENSE: The Broncos solved their red-zone issues last week against Idaho and put up 63 points, taking over the national lead in scoring. They have lived in opponent territory this season, they rarely turn the ball over and their two starting wide receivers have combined for 27 touchdowns. Plus, tailback Jeremy Avery has topped 100 rushing yards in two straight games. The group has been particularly potent in WAC play, scoring 258 points in five games (51.6 points per game). PLAYERS TO WATCH: WR Austin Pettis has thrown his hat into the crowded WAC Offensive Player of the Year ring with a school-record 14 touchdown catches and has caught a touchdown pass in every game this season.

11/20/09 - (CB) - Kyle Wilson, rSr, 5-10, 186
SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: The Broncos have shown some vulnerability the past two weeks, allowing 53 points to opposing offenses. That's the same number they allowed in the previous four games. Most concerning, they weren't sound against the run against Idaho. Utah State and Nevada, the next two opponents, are run-oriented teams. Still, the Broncos are clearly the best defensive team in the WAC and they have forced 27 turnovers this season. PLAYERS TO WATCH: CB Kyle Wilson was interception-less three weeks ago. Now he has one in each of the past three games including two for touchdowns.

11/20/09 - (QB) - Kellen Moore, rSo, 6-0, 187
THIS WEEK'S GAME: Boise State at Utah State, Nov. 20, 9:30PM EST, ESPN2: It should be cold and loud as the Broncos and Aggies meet in Logan. The cold is courtesy of the night kickoff for TV. The loud is courtesy of Boise State fans, who caravan to Logan by the hundreds. KEYS TO THE GAME: The Broncos have jumped on every opponent early in the game. Only two opponents have managed to get a lead and neither held it for long. The Aggies must withstand that barrage if they want to make a game of it in the second half. PLAYERS TO WATCH: QB Kellen Moore continues to build a Heisman Trophy resume. He has had the best season of any quarterback in the country so far No. 1 in touchdowns, touchdown-to-interception ratio and pass efficiency while leading an undefeated team.

11/20/09 - (QB) - Kellen Moore, rSo, 6-0, 187
The Broncos can't do much to help their Bowl Championship Series hopes at this point. It appears No. 4 TCU will complete an undefeated regular season and finish ahead of No. 6 Boise State in the BCS standings. That would leave the Broncos in the at-large pool. No non-BCS team has ever been selected as an at-large team but the Broncos appear to have a shot. The drop-off from the BCS is severe. The Broncos' next-best option might be a date with Houston in the Hawaii Bowl and even that game has roadblocks. The Broncos play their final road game of the season Friday at Utah State. Next week, they play Nevada at Bronco Stadium in a game that almost certainly will decide the outright WAC title. QB Kellen Moore leads the nation in pass efficiency, touchdown passes and touchdown-to-interception ratio. He has 32 touchdown passes and three interceptions. The only player with a lower interception percentage than Moore is Utah State quarterback Diondre Borel. They meet this week.

11/16/09 - (FB) - Richie Brockel, rSr, 6-1, 240
Boise State tight end Richie Brockel is expected to miss the rest of the season with a foot injury. Brockel, who has eight catches for 75 yards and two touchdowns this season, injured his left foot in the sixth-ranked Broncos’ 63-25 blowout over rival Idaho Saturday. Coach Chris Petersen declined to provide details of the injury, but said the senior was undergoing tests Monday. The Broncos (10-0) also lost freshman running back Matt Kaiserman for the season. Kaiserman, who saw his first action last month at Hawaii, suffered a broken right leg. In four games, Kaiserman has 33 carries for 150 yards and one touchdown. - AP Sports

11/16/09 - (WR) - Austin Pettis, Jr, 6-3, 202
WAC WEEK 11 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Boise State wide receiver Austin Pettis, a junior from Anaheim, Calif. (Lutheran HS), caught eight passes for 123 yards and four touchdowns in Boise State's 63-25 win over Idaho. The four touchdown receptions tied a school record and gave him a nation-best 14 on the season, also setting a new school record. The touchdowns came from 4, 8, 20 and 14 yards with the first three coming in the first half. It was the first time a WAC player caught four touchdown passes in a game since Hawai'i's Jason Rivers did it against Washington on Dec. 1, 2007. Others nominated on offense: junior wide receiver Greg Salas, Hawai'i; Nevada's offensive line; and sophomore running back Robert Turbin, Utah State. - WAC football

11/14/09 - (WR) - Austin Pettis, Jr, 6-3, 202
Kellen Moore threw four touchdown passes to Austin Pettis and tied a career high with five overall, helping No. 6 Boise State rout Idaho 63-25 on Saturday. Titus Young had a 100-yard kickoff return that was actually longer and Kyle Wilson returned an interception 71 yards for another score for the big-play Broncos (10-0, 5-0 WAC), who beat their rivals for the 11th consecutive time. Moore, the nation’s passing efficiency leader with 32 touchdowns and just three interceptions, passed Steve Young for 19th place on the Western Athletic Conference’s list for career touchdown passes. His 57th in two seasons was to Pettis early in the fourth quarter. - AP Sports

11/14/09 - (WR) - Titus Young, rJr, 5-11, 170
Titus Young returned kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown in Boise State’s game against Idaho. He actually ran a bit farther than that. Trey Farquhar’s kickoff for Idaho soared seven yards deep into the end zone just before halftime. Young appeared ready to concede a touchback, but teammate Doug Martin urged him to run it out. Young then sprinted untouched down the right sideline. Martin threw a crunching block and Winston Venable leveled Farquhar at the Idaho 40 to wipe out the Vandals’ last chance at a tackle. The 100-yard return tied a Boise State record set by John Broadous in 1981, also against Idaho. Young’s record-tying runback put the Broncos up 42-17 at the break. - AP Sports

11/06/09 - (WR) - Austin Pettis, Jr, 6-3, 202
Kellen Moore threw for 354 yards and three touchdowns, and No. 5 Boise State survived a brief scare on the road with a 45-35 victory over upstart Louisiana Tech on Friday night. Tech had pulled within 30-28 early in the fourth quarter on Dennis Morris’ leaping catch in the corner of the end zone. The Broncos defense buckled down long enough after that for Boise State to pull away with touchdowns on consecutive drives, the second score coming on Jeremy Avery’s 44-yard touchdown run. Avery finished with 146 yards rushing, while Titus Young caught eight passes for 110 yards and a touchdown for Boise State (9-0, 4-0 Western Athletic Conference). - AP Sports

11/06/09 - (CB) - Kyle Wilson, rSr, 5-10, 186
SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: The Broncos have shut out seven of eight opponents in the first quarter and have allowed just one touchdown in each of the past two games. The group ranks between 10th and 12th in the nation in total defense, scoring defense, rush defense and pass-efficiency defense. The Broncos allow 274.3 yards and 13.6 points per game. Only one opponent has generated more than 307 yards. PLAYERS TO WATCH: CB Kyle Wilson, the WAC Special Teams Player of the Week grabbed his first interception of the season last week and returned it for a touchdown. Opponents have been avoiding him most of the year.

11/06/09 - (QB) - Kellen Moore, rSo, 6-0, 187
THIS WEEK'S GAME: Boise State at Louisiana Tech, Nov. 6 The Bulldogs have given the Broncos all kinds of problems in Ruston over the years. However, the Bulldogs have some significant injury issues that could lower their chances. Most notably, running back Daniel Porter and receiver/returner Phillip Livas were knocked out of last week's game. KEYS TO THE GAME: The Broncos have never led at halftime in a WAC game in Ruston. They have taken charge of most of their games in the first half this season. Another fast start, particularly against a Bulldogs team that isn't explosive on offense, should allow the Broncos to roll. PLAYERS TO WATCH: The Broncos have won 10 straight road games, tying a school record. The Broncos received a first-place vote this week in the Harris poll, believed to be their first first-place vote in any major poll. Quarterback Kellen Moore leads the nation in pass efficiency and is second in touchdowns with 24. He also leads the nation in touchdown-to-interception ratio at 12:1. Moore has built a Heisman resume with six games with three touchdown passes or more and the nation's most efficient performance. He has thrown one pick in the past six games and two all season.

11/06/09 - (RB) - Doug Martin, rSo, 5-09, 201
SCOUTING THE OFFENSE: The Broncos have scored 99 points in their past two games. Earlier this year, they scored 100 points in a two-game span. They haven't been able to score consistently yet this year, so a third straight outburst would be a step in the right direction. Much of the inconsistency stems from the ground game, which has produced four 100-yard rushers but a couple of less-than-stellar performances against underwhelming competition. PLAYERS TO WATCH: TB Doug Martin has missed most of the past two games with a leg injury. He is expected to be back in his full role this week.

11/04/09 - (CB) - Kyle Wilson, rSr, 5-10, 186
2009 JIM THORPE AWARD SEMIFINALIST: Kyle Wilson, All-American cornerback at Boise State University, has been named a semi-finalist for the 2009 Jim Thorpe Award which is presented each season to the nation's best college defensive back. A senior from Piscataway, New Jersey, Wilson joins a group of 12 semi-finalists. The list will be narrowed on Nov. 23 (Monday) to three finalists who will then be invited to the nationally telecast Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show on Dec. 10 (Thursday). The winner will be announced on the show with the official presentation at a formal banquet in Oklahoma City on Feb. 9 (Tuesday). Wilson was selected to the 2009 Playboy preseason All-America team and last month was named a midseason All-American by Sporting News Magazine. Wilson has also been named a quarter-finalist for the Lott Trophy which recognizes student-athletes for performance, academics and community service. Last week in Boise State's 45-7 victory over San Jose State, Wilson led the Bronco defense unit with five tackles, one tackle for loss and picked off a Spartan pass which he returned 27 yards for his first career touchdown from an interception. For his effort, Wilson was named the WAC Defensive Player of the Week. Joining Wilson on the list of semi-finalists are Javier Arenas of Alabama; Eric Berry of Tennessee; Barry Church of Toledo; Perrish Cox of Oklahoma State; Joe Haden of Florida; Brandon Harris of Miami (Fla.); Taylor Mays of USC; Tyler Sash of Iowa; Darrell Stuckey of Kansas; Earl Thomas of Texas; and Alterraun Verner of UCLA. - Boise State football

11/02/09 - (CB) - Kyle Wilson, rSr, 5-10, 186
WAC WEEK 9 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Boise State cornerback Kyle Wilson, a senior from Piscataway, N.J. (Piscataway HS), recorded his first interception return for a touchdown when he picked off a pass and returned it 27 yards for the score in the Broncos' 45-7 win over San Jose State. He also had five tackles (4 solo), including one for a loss of two yards on a first down play that helped force a punt on the series of downs early in the game. Also nominated on defense: junior defensive end Chris Carter, Fresno State; junior safety Shiloh Keo, Idaho; and junior cornerback Doyle Miller, Nevada. - WAC football

10/31/09 - (QB) - Kellen Moore, rSo, 6-0, 187
Kellen Moore threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another as No. 6 Boise State coasted by San Jose State Saturday, the Broncos eighth straight victory. Boise State (8-0, 3-0 Western Athletic Conference) also got plenty of help from its defense, which held the Spartans (1-6, 0-3) to 223 total yards and forced two turnovers that led to touchdowns. In the last minute of the first half, the Broncos recovered a fumble deep in Spartans territory and scored four plays later on a 1-yard dive by Moore to go up 24-7 at the half. Early in the third quarter, cornerback Kyle Wilson picked off a pass and returned it 27 yards to put Boise State up 38-7. Moore, the nation’s most efficient passer coming into the game, was 21 of 33 before heading to the sidelines at the start of the fourth quarter. His three TD passes gave him 24 this season. His first TD pass was a 61-yarder to younger brother Kirby Moore that put the Broncos up 7-0 in the first quarter. The Broncos rolled up 430 total yards, but struggled most of the game to run the ball against a defense that was giving up 259 yards per game on the ground. - AP Sports

10/26/09 - (SS) - Jeron Johnson, rJr, 5-11, 195
GAME BALL GOES TO: Safety Jeron Johnson played center field against Hawaii's run-and-shoot. He grabbed two picks, including one in the end zone, and recovered a fumble. He also broke up a pass. QUOTE TO NOTE: "It was definitely draining on our bodies - with school, missing a lot of school, and traveling. And it's not like we were going to Idaho State. We were on the road pretty far. We stayed mentally tough and got through it. That's football. There's going to be obstacles placed in front of you." - Boise State safety Jeron Johnson, on the Broncos playing four of five on the road.

10/26/09 - (SS) - Jeron Johnson, rJr, 5-11, 195
WAC WEEK 8 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Boise State safety Jeron Johnson, a junior from Compton, Calif. (Dominguez HS), intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble in Boise State's 54-9 win at Hawai'i. Two of the turnovers led to 10 points for the Broncos. He also broke up another pass and had a solo tackle in the game. Also nominated on defense: junior linebacker Ben Jacobs, Fresno State; sophomore linebacker Jay Dudley, Louisiana Tech; sophomore linebacker James-Michael Johnson, Nevada; senior linebacker Ross Conner, New Mexico State; and sophomore safety Walter McClenton, Utah State. - WAC football

10/26/09 - (K) - Kyle Brotzman, rJr, 5-10, 201
WAC WEEK 8 SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Boise State kicker Kyle Brotzman, a junior from Meridian, Idaho (Meridian HS), accounted for 18 points in Boise State's victory at Hawai'i. He made a career-high four field goals and six extra points. The four field goals are the most made by any WAC player this year and tied for the seventh most in the nation. Brotzman also punted once for 72 yards, the longest punt by a WAC player this year. Other special teams nominations included: senior punt returner Chastin West, Fresno State; junior kick returner Phillip Livas, Louisiana Tech; junior kicker Ricky Drake, Nevada; and senior kicker Chris Ulinski, Utah State. - WAC football

10/25/09 - (SS) - Jeron Johnson, rJr, 5-11, 195
Kellen Moore threw a career-best five touchdown passes and No. 6 Boise State forced turnover after turnover in a dominating 54-9 victory over Hawaii on Saturday night to remain unbeaten and in the BCS race. The Broncos (7-0, 2-0 Western Athletic Conference) looked confident and sharp, building a 44-0 lead by the third quarter behind their stifling defense. For the night, the Broncos forced six turnovers that led to 30 points. Jeron Johnson intercepted two passes and also recovered a fumble on Hawaii’s opening drive that ignited Boise State’s scoring performance. Moore was 18 of 30 for 223 yards. Four of his scoring throws came in the first half. Titus Young had eight catches for 115 yards and three TDs, including a 48-yarder in the third quarter. Meanwhile, the year continued to get uglier for the injury-plauged Warriors (2-5, 0-4), who have lost five straight for the first time since 1998. - AP Sports

10/19/09 - (DE) - Ryan Winterswyk, rJr, 6-4, 263
GAME BALL GOES TO: DE Ryan Winterswyk - The junior recorded two sacks and a tackle for loss. He also frequently harassed Tulsa quarterback G.J. Kinne, including forcing a poor throw on the Hurricane's last play.

10/14/09 - (QB) - Kellen Moore, rSo, 6-0, 187
Kellen Moore threw two short touchdown passes to Tommy Gallarda, and No. 5 Boise State survived a late scare from Tulsa to escape with a 28-21 victory Wednesday night in one of the last road tests standing between the undefeated Broncos and the BCS. With Boise State (6-0) trailing for the first time all season, Moore was perfect on two scoring drives to put the Broncos ahead to stay. Tulsa (4-2) got within 28-21 in the fourth quarter when G.J. Kinne and Slick Shelley connected on consecutive passes for 91 yards, including a 55-yarder for a touchdown. The Golden Hurricane had one last chance to tie it in the final 2 minutes, but Boise State forced its fourth three-and-out of the second half to ice the game. - AP Sports

10/14/09 - (CB) - Kyle Wilson, rSr, 5-10, 186
SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: The Broncos have been inconsistent after a dominant start to the season. They had a midgame meltdown against Fresno State and followed dominant first halves with soft second halves the last two games, against Bowling Green and UC Davis. One thing that has been consistent the Broncos haven't allowed a first-quarter point all year, allowing them to score first each time. PLAYERS TO WATCH: CB Kyle Wilson - The preseason All-American missed the last game with a shoulder injury. He says he's healthy now. He will be important against Tulsa.

10/14/09 - (WR) - Austin Pettis, Jr, 6-3, 202
SCOUTING THE OFFENSE: The Broncos need to do a better job finishing drives. They have scored touchdowns on just 16 of 27 red-zone trips, including six empty visits. That problem plagued them in their last outing against UC Davis, when the Broncos netted six points out of their first three red-zone trips. The problems have been multiple penalties, bad snaps, turnovers and, at times, soft running by the tailbacks. PLAYERS TO WATCH: WR Austin Pettis made 10 catches against UC Davis, giving him 28 receptions for 378 yards and six touchdowns this season. He has become more of a big-play threat this year.

10/14/09 - (QB) - Kellen Moore, rSo, 6-0, 187
THIS WEEK'S GAME: Boise State at Tulsa, Oct. 14 These teams are a combined 9-1. The difference is that each team has faced one elite opponent and, while Boise State dominated Oregon, Tulsa got smashed by Oklahoma. KEYS TO THE GAME: The Broncos need to capitalize on their scoring opportunities, particularly early in the game. That has been an issue throughout the year. Defensively, they'll need to force a couple turnovers to get the high-powered Tulsa offense off the field. PLAYERS TO WATCH: QB Kellen Moore has thrown 13 touchdown passes and just two interceptions this season to rank second in the nation in pass efficiency. However, Tulsa's style of defense has confused Boise State quarterbacks in the past. Moore ranks second in the nation in pass efficiency behind No. 1 Jimmy Clausen of Notre Dame. The team with the best record on the Broncos' remaining schedule is surprising Idaho, which improved to 5-1 on Saturday. Boise State has scored 100 points in two road games this season.

10/14/09 - (CB) - Kyle Wilson, rSr, 5-10, 186
Two of the top non-BCS programs in the country meet Wednesday night in Tulsa. Boise State, which has won 27 games since the start of the 2007 season, and Tulsa, which has won 25, also are former conference rivals. They played together in the WAC from 2001 to 2004. The game gives the No. 5 Broncos a chance to impress poll voters against a team with a 4-1 record and solid reputation. And the Hurricane should provide a test for the Broncos. They're expecting a sellout crowd, they've led the nation in total offense the past two years and their defense hasn't allowed a rushing touchdown this season. This might, in fact, be the Broncos' stiffest remaining test. "We're definitely using this as a spotlight, statement game," senior cornerback Kyle Wilson said. "We really want to get out there and just prove a point, really rebound from (the performance against UC Davis) and get things going. There are not many games you can play with a spotlight like this game."
