08/31/10 - (RB) - Doug Martin, rJr, 5-09, 201 Boise State named junior Doug Martin its starting tailback Monday, developing a pecking order for the three standouts who share that position. Junior D.J. Harper and senior Jeremy Avery also will have roles. Harper essentially will serve as the second half of a 1-2 punch on the base running plays. Avery, the smallest and quickest of the three, will have a specialized package of plays. Martin (5-foot-9, 212 pounds) has been considered a future star since his redshirt year, when defensive players said he was the best tailback they faced all year. He played sparingly in 2008, moved to defense in spring 2009, rejoined the offense when Harper was injured three games into the season and eventually tied for the team lead with 15 touchdowns last season. "Doug had a great camp," offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin said. "All the other guys did, too. É We utilized (Martin) in different ways in camp and he did a nice job with it." - Chadd Cripe, Idaho Statesman

08/27/10 - (DE) - Shea McClellin, rJr, 6-3, 262 Shea McClellin is either the unassuming hero or the horror-flick villain, depending on your perspective. To Boise State football coach Chris Petersen, he is Clark Kent. "You don't even see him," Petersen said. "He's just got his head down in the corner and then when he gets on that field, the cape comes on and he's a good player." To the Broncos' offense, he is Freddy Krueger. "Shea's a nightmare," senior quarterback Mike Coughlin said. "He's going to be great for us this year." Coughlin uttered those words moments after McClellin terrorized the offense with four sacks in the final scrimmage of fall camp. Defensive coordinator and line coach Pete Kwiatkowski has predicted a breakout season for McClellin since spring ball - and it's clear McClellin is on that path. "He's just gotten to the point where he's gained more confidence in his abilities," Kwiatkowski said. "He's a lot more physical. You pair that with he's smart and he is a good athlete - he's fast and explosive - and it's a good combination." McClellin emerged as a starter early last season. He finished the year with 36 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks and two pass breakups. - Chadd Cripe, The Idaho Statesman

08/25/10 - (WR) - Matt Miller, Fr, 6-3, 207 Boise State wide receiver Matt Miller of Helena is out for the season after tearing the Achilles tendon in his right leg. Miller, a Helena Capital graduate, was injured Friday while running a fade route to the corner of the end zone. He was expected to redshirt this season. Boise State coach Chris Peterson says he was really impressed with what he had seen from Miller during fall drills. The Idaho Statesman reports that Miller will miss six to eight months and is questionable for spring ball. Miller was named the 2009 Montana Gatorade football player of the year after catching 54 passes for 900 yards and six touchdowns and rushing for 351 yards and 12 more scores as a senior. - AP Sports
08/19/10 - (QB) - Kellen Moore, rJr, 6-0, 187 MOST IMPORTANT PLAYER: QB Kellen Moore, a junior, enters his third year as the starting quarterback. He's 26-1 -- and he finished second in the nation in pass efficiency last year. His smarts and accuracy make him one of the best quarterbacks in college football. The inexperience behind him -- senior Mike Coughlin, who has played sparingly in his career, and redshirt freshman Joe Southwick will compete for the backup job -- makes him the Broncos' most important player. QUOTE TO NOTE: "His play speaks for itself. Kellen (Moore) has gotten as much publicity as anyone we've ever had and rightly so, but I think it's our job as coaches to kind of protect him and let him focus on what he needs to focus on -- and that (media) stuff can be tremendously distracting. It's tremendously distracting for me and I'm a lot older and don't play." - Boise State coach Chris Petersen, on his decision to limit quarterback Kellen Moore's media obligations since he became the starter in 2008.
08/19/10 - (DE) - Shea McClellin, rJr, 6-3, 262 BREAKOUT STAR: DE Shea McClellin - The product of a small town in Idaho has quietly turned into a versatile force on the Broncos' defense. He still will be overshadowed by senior end Ryan Winterswyk, but coaches say he's on the verge of becoming a dominant player.
08/19/10 - (FS) - Jason Robinson, rSr, 5-11, 194 Senior safety Jason Robinson has been suspended for the first three games of the season after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor battery charge. He also was suspended during spring ball. Robinson is a key special-teamer.
08/19/10 - (WR) - Geraldo Hiwat, rFr, 6-3, 190 NEWCOMER TO WATCH: WR Geraldo Hiwat - The Holland native played high school football in Boise. He's tall, rangy and fast. As he adds polish, he could become the second deep threat the Broncos' offense needs.
08/19/10 - (CB) - Jamar Taylor, rSo, 5-11, 193 CB Jamar Taylor and CB Jerrell Gavins are locked in the best position battle of camp. They're vying for the spot held the past three and half years by Kyle Wilson, a first-round draft pick of the New York Jets.
08/19/10 - (QB) - Kellen Moore, rJr, 6-0, 187 The Broncos enter the 2010 season as one of the biggest stories in college football. They have won 26 of their past 27 games, including two defeats of Oregon and one of undefeated TCU. They finished No. 4 in the AP poll last year and return 22 starters - a combination that makes them legitimate national championship contenders. And adding to the hype is the Broncos' season opener - a Monday night, made-for-TV showdown with ACC power Virginia Tech in Landover, Md. The game is widely considered one of the most important of the season. This is the second straight season that the Broncos have opened the season with a marquee game. They beat Oregon last year on a Thursday night, propelling them to their second Fiesta Bowl championship in four years. But the Broncos aren't without their question marks. The offensive line, which was improved last year but has been unstable in recent years, is unsettled. The depth at wide receiver is unproven. All-American quarterback Kellen Moore might be irreplaceable. And one of the two missing starters is NFL first-round cornerback Kyle Wilson. "We need to be preparing as if our life is on the line," Boise State coach Chris Petersen said. "Before we know it we're going to be headed back to (Landover) to play (Virginia Tech) and I think our guys realize that as well."
08/17/10 - (DE) - Ryan Winterswyk, rSr, 6-4, 268 College football players aren't done with recruiting when they sign their letters of intent. Three years later, it starts all over again. The second time, it's agents - not coaches - on the other end of the phone. And players must be careful during those interactions to make sure they don't damage their college eligibility. "It's almost like college recruiting," Boise State senior defensive end and NFL prospect Ryan Winterswyk said. "You'll get 15 phone calls in one day, like a Tuesday. You're like, 'OK, must be a recruiting day.' "That started even last year toward the end of the season." Boise State coach Chris Petersen talked to his seniors after the 2009 season to remind them of the rules. Agents are allowed to contact players once they've been out of high school for three years, but athletes can't accept any sort of "gift" - including meals and transportation. Boise State also informs players' parents, who also are unable to accept benefits, of the rules. Petersen talks to them and the parents receive paperwork. "We're pretty educated because you can't get anything from them," Winterswyk said. "It's a flat-line rule. There's no breaking that. É There's no one offering us goodies anyway." Said Petersen: "There are some really good, honest (agents) out there. Unfortunately, like every business, there are some that aren't going to do it the right way. I try to really open our kids' eyes to that." - Chadd Cripe, The Idaho Statesman

Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced on November 8th and three finalists for each award will be announced November 22nd. - Maxwell Football Club
08/11/10 - (OG) - Nate Potter, rJr, 6-6, 300 Left tackle has become one of the most hyped and lucrative positions in football - just look at Ryan Clady, the former Boise State left tackle who stands to make tens of millions of dollars in his NFL career. So it's natural that people started scratching their heads when the Boise State coaches moved All-WAC left tackle Nate Potter to left guard last spring. Offensive line coach Chris Strausser insists the move is the best fit for Potter, who has the size and strength to handle defensive tackles, and the Broncos, who have much more talent at tackle than guard. "Take out the media and the NFL money and some of that stuff and the center spot is the most important spot," Strausser said. "You build your team from the inside out. É I'm just trying to get the guys where they fit best. So he is certainly not any less important at guard than he was at tackle." Potter (6-foot-6, 300 pounds), who gained attention as an NFL prospect with his strong second half of last season, still is adapting to his new position. He spent time over the summer watching video of NFL guards to gain a better understanding of how to play in tight spaces. "It's a good move for me," he said. "It makes me a more well-rounded player and I'm doing what's best for the team. I like the move. I'm still not used to it. É It's going to take a while to master certain techniques, but it's a fun challenge." - Chadd Cripe, The Idaho Statesman
08/11/10 - (QB) - Kellen Moore, rJr, 6-0, 187 2010 WALTER CAMP PLAYER OF THE YEAR WATCH LIST: Kellen Moore, QB, Junior, Boise State, has been named one of thirty "players to watch" for the 2010 Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year award, the nation's fourth-oldest individual college football accolade. Walter Camp, "The Father of American football," first selected an All-America team in 1889. Moore (6-0, 191), a junior from Prosser, Wash. (Prosser HS), is coming off one of the best seasons of any quarterback in Boise State history. He made both national and school history, while helping to lead the Broncos to a perfect 14-0 season and a 17-10 win over TCU in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. He finished his sophomore campaign with 3,536 passing yards having completed 64.3 percent of his passes (277-of-431). Most impressively, however, Moore set the NCAA single season record for lowest percentage of passes had intercepted at 0.69 percent (3 of 431). He also broke the Boise State single season record for touchdown throws (39). Moore finished the season ranked second in the nation in both pass efficiency rating (161.65) and touchdown passes. - Boise State football
08/11/10 - (WR) - Titus Young, rSr, 6-0, 170 SIX MUST-SEE GAMES IN 2010: Boise State vs. Virginia Tech at FedEx Field, Sept. 6. No early season game has the potential to more profoundly affect the season. The Broncos, coming off an unbeaten season, will likely start the 2010 season right around the top five. Beating the highly ranked Hokies on what can hardly be called a neutral field could make Boise State a serious threat to reach the BCS championship game. - AP Sports
08/10/10 - (WR) - Titus Young, rSr, 6-0, 170 The Idaho Statesman is reporting that coach Chris Petersen has banned players from posting on Twitter for the duration of the season. Petersen says posting on the social networking site is a distraction the team doesn't need as the Broncos enter the season as favorites to win another Western Athletic Conference title. - AP Sports
