01/06/18 - (QB) - Baker Mayfield, rSr, 6-0, 220
Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley says he believes Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield ranks among the all-time great quarterbacks in college football history. The numbers support Riley's claim. Mayfield is the first quarterback to finish in the top four in the Heisman balloting three straight years. He ranks sixth in NCAA history in both passing touchdowns (129) and total offense (15,402 yards) and 10th in career yards passing (14,320). He leaves as the all-time FBS leader in passing efficiency with a career mark of 176.0, topping Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford's previous record of 175.6. His mark of 190.7 in three years at Oklahoma crushed Bradford's previous school record. Only his freshman year at Texas Tech brought the overall total down.

Mayfield set the FBS record for passing efficiency in a season with a rating of 196.4 last year, then broke it with a 198.9 rating this season. Though the Sooners lost to Georgia in the Rose Bowl on Monday , Riley said Mayfield's overall accomplishments put him "up there" with the greats. "I would say how consistent and how efficient he played the position he played the position more efficiently than anybody ever has," Riley said. "And did it for a long period of time. We're not just talking about one year. Did it with different sets of skill groups. Was a great leader." Mayfield walked on after transferring to Oklahoma from Texas Tech and led the Sooners to three Big 12 titles. The Sooners never lost in what the school calls "Championship November" with him at quarterback. "Very few guys win three straight championships," Riley said. "And the path he took to get there was a little bit obviously unconventional. Maybe a little bit tougher than most." - AP College Football

01/04/18 - (TE) - *Mark Andrews, rJr, 6-4, 254
Oklahoma teammates Mark Andrews and Orlando Brown will enter the NFL draft. Andrews, a tight end, made his announcement on Twitter on Thursday. The redshirt junior won the Mackey Award as the nation's best tight end this season. The three-time All-Big 12 selection finished this year with 62 passes for 958 yards and eight touchdowns. He is projected to be selected in the first two rounds. "I will miss my teammates, coaches, and friends on campus, but I am excited for this next step," Andrews said in the statement. - AP College Football

01/03/18 - (OT) - *Orlando Brown, rJr, 6-7, 345
Oklahoma offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr. is giving up his final year of eligibility to enter the 2018 NFL draft. The redshirt junior left tackle announced his intentions Wednesday on Twitter. "After talking things over with my family and coaches, I will be declaring early for the NFL Draft," Brown tweeted. "It's been an amazing 4 years here. I wouldn't want to be a part of any other university. Thank you Sooner Nation." Brown, the son of former NFL offensive tackle Orlando "Zeus" Brown, started at Oklahoma at left tackle since his redshirt freshman season in 2015. The 6-foot-8, 345-pound Brown is considered a potential first-round pick in April. He was a unanimous first-team All-America pick and a finalist for the Outland Trophy this year as the blind-side blocker for Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Baker Mayfield. - The Sports Xchange

01/02/18 - (QB) - Baker Mayfield, rSr, 6-0, 220
Georgia linebacker Davin Bellamy had two words of wisdom for Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield following the teams' College Football Playoff semifinal on Monday. Then, Bellamy repeated those words again and again. "Humble yourself," Bellamy shouted as Mayfield congratulated the opposition following the Bulldogs' 54-48 win in double overtime in the Rose Bowl. Mayfield did not immediately acknowledge the chants of Bellamy, who apparently was perturbed by the antics of the Heisman Trophy winner. "All I'm saying is humble yourself," Bellamy told ESPN after the game. "All the flamboyancy ... I carry myself the same way, but humble yourself, man. "Our wide receivers came back and told us that they were running their routes before we went out there and he was on their line. Just humble yourself, man, just humble yourself. You're not built like that."

Mayfield has come under scrutiny for lewd crotch grabbing and other incidents, leading to him rendering an apology after the Sooners' rout of Kansas earlier this season as well as planting an Oklahoma flag in the middle of Ohio Stadium. When speaking to reporters after the game, Mayfield said Bellamy earned the right to say what he wants because his team won. "They can say what they want, they won the game," Mayfield said. Mayfield completed 23 of 35 passes for 287 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He also caught a 2-yard touchdown. Bellamy had two tackles in the win. - The Sports Xchange

12/30/17 - (TE) - *Mark Andrews, rJr, 6-4, 254
New England Patriots star Rob Gronknowski is the new measuring stick for tight ends, and Oklahoma's Mark Andrews gets the comparison from someone qualified to offer it. Sooners defensive coordinator Mike Stoops recruited and coached Gronkowski when he was the head coach at Arizona. In the 6-foot-5 and 254-pound junior Andrews, Stoops sees plenty of similarities to Gronkowski in practice everyday. "Gronk is probably an inch taller. Maybe a little more length," Stoops said at Rose Bowl media day on Saturday. "But their ability to run routes and get open are what's unique about those guys."

Andrews has 58 receptions for 906 yards and eight touchdowns this season, leading Oklahoma in catches and touchdown catches. He leads all FBS tight ends in yards receiving, ranks second in receptions and is tied for third in touchdown receptions. Andrews has to improve as an in-line blocker to match Gronkowski, Stoops said. That isn't as big of a problem in college, as Andrews frequently lines up in the slot. But it is Andrews' receiving skills that will be enticing to an NFL team looking for the next Gronk. "Mark can do whatever he wants on the football field," Stoops said. "Create matchups, that's what Mark is going to be able to do at the next level." - AP College Football

12/30/17 - (QB) - Baker Mayfield, rSr, 6-0, 220
Oklahoma's Heisman-winning quarterback Baker Mayfield is battling a flu-like illness as he prepares for Monday's night's Rose Bowl matchup against Georgia. Mayfield, who had been absent from off-field activities since Wednesday, initially did not show up for Rose Bowl media day in Los Angeles on Saturday, but he later appeared at his podium after he saw all the speculation about his absence. Sooners coach Lincoln Riley said his senior quarterback was "pretty sick" when the team arrived in Southern California late Tuesday night. "We've limited him in some areas," Riley said of Mayfield at practice. "Energy level is not normal for him right now, but nothing major as far as having to remove him or him just not being able to physically do anything." Mayfield will be taking on one of the best defenses in the country as No. 2 Oklahoma takes on No. 3 Georgia in a College Football Playoff semifinal game.

"When it comes down to it, it's not going to hinder my play. I'll still be out there Monday for the most important thing," Mayfield said, sounding a bit hoarse with an occasional cough. "I'm not dying." There's no guarantee that Mayfield will be at full strength, however. "We're trying to push him to get better, trying to just get over the hump," Riley said. "We haven't been able to get over the hump with his illness yet. ... "He'll be ready to play. Will he be 100 percent physically? We'll see. But he's not going to miss this one." Mayfield has completed 262 of 369 passes for 4,340 yards, with 41 touchdowns and five interceptions. He needs 118 yards of total offense to break Oklahoma's single-season record of 4,767, set by Sam Bradford in 2008. - The Sports Xchange

12/23/17 - (QB) - Baker Mayfield, rSr, 6-0, 220
Fresh off his trip to New York City to pick up the Heisman Trophy, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield will soon be making travel plans for Mobile. College football's most electrifying player in 2017 has accepted his invitation to the 2018 Reese's Senior Bowl, the game announced on Friday. "Baker is known for his competitive personality, so it's not a surprise that he would want to be in Mobile to showcase his abilities and leadership qualities," said Reese's Senior Bowl Executive Director Phil Savage. "And, it's exciting for the Reese's Senior Bowl to have a Heisman Trophy winner in our game."

Mayfield will be the first Heisman winner to come to the Reese's Senior Bowl since Tim Tebow in 2007 and the fourth overall in the past 15 years (Troy Smith, 2006; Carson Palmer, 2002). Mayfield was spectacular during his final year of college, leading the 2nd-ranked Sooners to a spot in the four-team playoff. The confident QB will lead 2nd-ranked Oklahoma against 3rd-ranked Georgia in the semifinals on New Year's Day. So far this season the former walk-on has thrown for 4,340 yards, 41 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He led the Sooners to the Big 12 Championship and ran away in voting for the Heisman Trophy Award, given to the nation's top player. - SeniorBowl.com
