 Draft Scout C.J. Bacher News
12/29/08 - Northwestern has run the shotgun spread since 2000, but the Wildcats tweaked their philosophy slightly when former Bowling Green offensive coordinator Mick McCall took NU's coordinator job in the offseason. McCall simplified the reads for veteran QB C.J. Bacher and insisted that he take what the defense gives him. The Wildcats haven't been much of a quick-strike offense, but they have been extremely good at putting together long drives. They rank in the middle of the Big Ten pack and the national rankings in the primary statistical categories: They're tied for 58th in rushing (147.6 ypg), 63rd in passing (209.4 ypg), 62nd in total offense (357.0 ypg) and 72nd in scoring (24.5 ppg). However, those numbers would have been bigger if Bacher hadn't missed two late games with a pulled hamstring and senior RB Tyrell Sutton hadn't missed the final four-plus games with a serious wrist injury. Sutton, who owns 3,772 career rushing yards and 37 TDs, hopes to return in time for the bowl game, but he's probably best described as somewhere between questionable and doubtful. There's little doubt Missouri will try to test Northwestern's offensive line that features three redshirt freshmen, a junior who had just three career starts prior to this year and a senior who didn't switch from the D-Line to the O-Line until last offseason.
12/29/08 - PLAYERS TO WATCH: Bacher will make the Alamo Bowl his 28th career start. For the most part, there's an easy way to tell if Northwestern won a particular game: Check Bacher's interception total. He owns 40 career TDs and 42 career INTs. In starts where he threw at least 2 interceptions, the Wildcats have gone 4-11. In starts where he threw 1 pick or none, the Wildcats have gone 12-0. He toughed out Northwestern's final two regular-season games with a less-than-100 percent hamstring, but ought to be 100 percent for the Alamo Bowl.
11/24/08 - BIG TEN WEEK 13 TOP PERFORMER: NU QB C.J. Bachér: Totaled 264 yards of offense, completing 22-of-33 passes (66.7 pct.) for 230 yards and two TDs and adding 34 rushing yards. - Big Ten Football
11/22/08 - C.J. Bacher threw two touchdown passes, one to Eric Peterman in the fourth quarter after a 51-yard punt return by Brendan Smith, as Northwestern beat Illinois 27-10 Saturday to strengthen its case for a New Year's Day bowl. The Wildcats (9-3, 5-3) became just the fifth team in school history to win at least nine games -- the first since 1996 when coach Pat Fitzgerald was the team's star linebacker. Fans rushed out of the stands and mobbed the team in the middle of the field to celebrate at the end of a cold game for which the wind chill at kickoff was 26 degrees. Northwestern was already ensured of a bowl bid, but was hoping to land one on Jan. 1. Representatives from the Outback and Capital One -- both on New Year's Day -- and the Alamo and Insight bowls were at the game. For Illinois, it was the end to a disappointing season following up on a Rose Bowl trip. - AP Sports
11/21/08 - All of Northwestern's 23 seniors chose to come to Evanston after the Wildcats posted 6-6 seasons. Then, when they were freshmen, record-setting quarterback Brett Basanez (now with the Carolina Panthers) led the way to a 7-4 regular-season mark and a trip to the Sun Bowl. But then came the lean and tragic years. Coach Randy Walker passed away in June 2006. Pat Fitzgerald, the nation's youngest Div. I-A coach, took over one of the nation's younger teams and directed 4-8 and 6-6 seasons. In the offseason, the large and experienced senior class dedicated itself to finishing their careers with something special. Heading into Saturday's regular-season finale at home against Illinois, the Wildcats have done just that. Though a raft of recent injuries to key seniors (running back Tyrell Sutton, middle linebacker Malcolm Arrington, quarterback C.J. Bacher) have tried to derail the Wildcats, they find themselves with a chance to wrap the school's winningest season since 1996. Last week's win at Michigan (the school's first since 1995) gave NU its first 8-win season since 2000. And yet, they're still not satisfied. As they started preparing for Illinois and the chance to regain the Sweet Sioux Tomahawk on Monday morning, Fitzgerald took a quick poll in the locker room. "We didn't necessarily play our best football for four quarters up in Ann Arbor," Fitzgerald said. "When I asked the team, 'Who has got a lot to improve on today?' the entire room put their hand up. Coaches included. So I like where our attitude is at. We continue to have that improvement mentality."
