Post-Draft Outlook:
A closer look at the Saints' picks: Round 3/95 -- Jimmy Graham, TE, 6-6, 259, Miami (Fla.): As a college basketball player for three years, he's a project. But the Saints like his 4.50 speed, 38 1/2-inch vertical leap and the fact he had five TDs on only 17 receptions last year. - by The Sports Xchange

 Draft Scout Jimmy Graham News
07/17/14 - TE Jimmy Graham received the wide receiver money he wanted Tuesday (July 15). Team officials confirmed to The Sports Xchange that a deal was done, but would not discuss financial details. NFL Network reported the agreement includes $21 million of guaranteed money. CBS Sports reported the deal is a two-year, $21 million pact, but the contract reportedly could be worth a maximum of $40 million over four years. The guaranteed money breaks down to $13 million this year and $8 million guaranteed for injury only in 2015. That $8 million becomes fully guaranteed if he is on the roster on the third day of the Feb. 2015 waiver period. "It's official I'm bleeding black and gold this morning! Thank you WhoDatNation for all the support," Graham tweeted Tuesday morning. Graham, 27, will receive $13 million in the first year of the deal. The agreement was hammered out after talks reconvened Monday night and concluded hours before the 3 p.m. Central Time Tuesday deadline for franchise players to sign a new long-term contract. Graham otherwise would have been eligible for $7.035 million this year as a franchised player. Graham fought for franchise compensation equal to a wide receiver, which is $12.312 million for the franchise year. His average of $10 million a year would rate Graham No. 7 among the league's highest-paid wide receivers, but it sets a benchmark for tight ends. It is especially meaningful for those who, like Graham, are often primary targets and deployed in much the same manner as a wide receiver. Graham's new deal will surely throw gas on the fire that is burning in San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, who has two years left on a six-year, $42.7 million extension he signed in 2010. Davis made a statement that he wants a new and bigger deal by missing OTAs and the minicamp. The 49ers are scheduled to report to training camp July 23. If Davis doesn't get a new deal, he can hold out and let the fines build up, or he can show
02/28/14 - TE Jimmy Graham was designated as the team's franchise player on Friday. But that could be just the beginning of a tug of war between the two sides. For starters, is Graham a tight end or wide receiver? The value of the one-year franchise tender for wide receivers is $12.312 million, more than $5 million more than the tag value for tight ends ($7.035 million. The Saints did not declare Graham's position when making the tender; that will be determined by the NFL Management Council. Drafted as a tight end out of Miami, Graham is listed as a tight end by the Saints, but he lined up in the slot -- off the line of scrimmage in the formation -- and plans to file a grievance through the NFLPA if he his tender is for a tight end. Saints coach Sean Payton wouldn't talk about the specifics of free agency, but said he understands the concerns of fans who fear losing the 6-foot-7, 265-pounder. "We have smart fans. ... They're smart enough to understand that, just like we have in years past, we're going to make decisions as best we can for our club moving forward," Payton said. "They're going to be able to read closely between the lines and understand we're going to be in good shape. They're not going to be in a panic. They're going to be confident just the same way we are." Quarterback Drew Brees said in January he's willing to do what it will take to sign Graham or any other player who could make a difference for the team going forward. For Brees, who accepted a five-year, $100 million contract in 2012, that wouldn't mean a pay cut. It might mean restructuring his deal if he and the Saints, who could be as much as $5 million over the $133 million salary cap for 2014, were able to get that done. For the second year in a row, Brees sidestepped questions about restructuring his deal -- which includes cap hits of $18.4 million, $26.4 million and $27.4 million the next three seasons. "Whatever I can do to help this team ... if they want to co
