Draft Scout *Santonio Holmes News
11/11/14 - WR Santonio Holmes was waived by the Bears Tuesday (Nov. 11).
08/29/14 - WR Santonio Holmes probably needed to show a flash of something to ensure he'd be a part of the regular-season roster and he did more than that with a 32-yard catch, spin and run against Cleveland to go with a 30-yard punt return. "You see the explosion in him," head coach Marc Trestman said. "He caught a short throw, turned and ran, separated from the defense. That's a good sign." Considering the hamstring and foot injuries Holmes had to overcome the last few years, it was the type of thing the Bears needed to see from a 30-year-old player hoping to be the third receiver after Marquess Wilson's broken collarbone.
08/24/14 - WR Santonio Holmes played against Seattle after only a week with the team and caught a 7-yard pass. The battle for the third receiver spot remains open, although Josh Morgan made three catches for 48 yards, including a 23-yarder, as he tried to secure the job.
08/16/14 - WR Santonio Holmes was signed by the Bears Saturday (Aug. 16). The Super Bowl XLIII MVP has hauled in 381 receptions for 5,963 yards (15.7 average) and 36 touchdowns over eight NFL seasons with the Steelers (2006-09) and Jets (2010-13) after being selected by Pittsburgh in the first round (25th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft. He has added 66 punt returns for 536 yards and a touchdown, 18 kickoff returns for 436 yards and 16 carries for 89 yards.
In the postseason, the 5-11, 192-pound Holmes has started five of seven games played hauling in 25 receptions for 402 yards and five touchdowns.
03/10/14 - Holmes was due $8.25 million in salary in 2014. He received $24 million guaranteed when the Jets signed him to a five-year, $45.25 million contract in 2011. He was scheduled to count $10.75 million against the team's cap.
"I appreciate Tone's contributions over the last four seasons. I've always admired his knack for making the clutch play," coach Rex Ryan said. "He's a tremendous competitor who wants the ball in his hands when the game is on the line. I wish him nothing but the best."
Holmes was limited to only four games in 2012 due to a foot injury that lingered into 2013 when he played in 11 games. He caught 23 passes for 456 yards and one touchdown last season.
Holmes has totaled 146 catches for 2,128 yards and 16 touchdowns in his four years with the Jets. He was acquired from the Pittsburgh Steelers in a trade in 2010.
A first-round pick in 2006, Holmes was voted the team's rookie of the year and earned MVP honors in Super Bowl XLVIII with nine receptions for 131 yards, including the go-ahead 6-yard touchdown grab in the back of the end zone that beat the Arizona Cardinals.
