Draft Scout Snapshot: A closer look at the Cardinals' picks: Round 3/69 - Tyrann Mathieu, FS, 5-9, 186, Louisiana State...The Cardinals gambled here. Mathieu has a history of troubles, mostly with marijuana. The Cardinals think Mathieu is sincere about changing his life, and they expect his former LSU teammate, Patrick Peterson, to be a mentor. Mathieu will start his NFL career as a free safety. He doesn't have ideal speed for cornerback, and playing safety will give him a chance to roam the field and make plays on the ball, his strength. He also will return punts, along with Peterson. QUOTE TO NOTE: "I couldn't think of a better team to go to. I spent so much time out there with Patrick, that became sort of like my second home. The whole time, I was telling myself, 'don't cry.' I know I'm on the right track." -- Defensive back Tyrann Mathieu. - The Sports Xchange

04/28/13 - The Cardinals are well aware they took a risk in the third round by drafting LSU defensive back Tyrann Mathieu, who was suspended his final year in college for various transgressions, including failed drug tests. Mathieu will have to meet certain conditions with the Cardinals, including weekly drug tests and counseling sessions. "At the end of the day, there is always an element of risk with any of these picks," said general manager Steve Keim. "We're going to take the necessary measures to make sure he walks the straight and narrow." - The Sports Xchange

04/24/13 - "First-round draft pick" Tyrann Mathieu planning party for Thursday...Former LSU star cornerback Tyrann Mathieu has taken the long way to the 2013 NFL Draft, but it appears the oft-troubled playmaker is ready to make his name in the league. And, if this invitation to Honey Badger's post-party is any indication, Mathieu expects to be taken in the first round Thursday evening. Most draft analysts have Mathieu going somewhere in the second or third round -- if not later -- which means his Thursday night party at SL nightclub in New York City may be a little premature, and potentially somewhat uncomfortable.

Mathieu's skills have never been the issue. A ballhawk while at LSU, Mathieu was the recipient of the 2011 Chuck Bednarik Award, which is given to the nation's top collegiate defender. He was later dismissed from LSU for violating team rules, and he entered a Houston rehab center for help managing his marijuana use. And thus, his draft stock plummeted. Still, if Mathieu can convince teams he can keep his behavior in check, he could be a late-round steal. Or he could be a first-round pick. In this draft, it's hard to tell. - Evan Hilbert, CBSSports.com

04/21/13 - Tyrann Mathieu's career at LSU has been under the microscope recently as the former Heisman Trophy finalist prepares for the 2013 NFL Draft. Mathieu's off-the-field issues, which included an arrest for possession of marijuana, eventually led to his dismissal from the football program. USA Today published a story about Mathieu in advance of the draft that includes a comment from an NFL assistant after the interview process. According to the coach, Matheiu admitted to failing multiple drug tests while at LSU. During one visit, Mathieu was asked how many drug tests he failed before he was suspended in college.

According to an assistant coach for the team, Mathieu responded: "I quit counting at 10. I really don't know." The coach, who spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to comment about the evaluation, doesn't dump all of the blame on Mathieu. He points a finger at LSU. "If he flunked 10 tests before they suspended him, it shows that he got no kind of help," the coach said. - Chip Patterson, CBSSports.com

04/21/13 - Tyrann Mathieu has issued a statement in response to the USA Today story referenced below. "It is irresponsible and shows a lack of integrity for anyone to disclose medical information regardless of how it was gathered," Mathieu said in a statement released by LSU. "I would expect that conversations regarding my drug testing history during the course of my medical treatment would be private. LSU has a strong drug testing program, and LSU went to great lengths to help me in my treatment and recovery. "I understand that many people enjoy reading about the negative side of sports, but to publish those second-hand comments without being given a chance to address that comment prior to the publication of the article is irresponsible." - Chip Patterson, CBSSports.com
