09/29/16 - S Tyrann Mathieu is getting closer and closer to being the Honey Badger of old. How does he know this? Because like many of his Cardinals' teammates, he's wearing a GPS device that measures his exertion during workouts and games. Mathieu's numbers are trending upwards.
"I'm getting better," he said. "I'm starting to feel better after every game. My numbers were pretty much the same from the first quarter to the fourth quarter, so I think that says a lot."
The plan has been for Mathieu to come out every fourth series, but at halftime in Buffalo last Sunday he told coaches he wasn't coming out of the game in the second half. So he stayed in. The numbers show that Mathieu is maintaining his speed throughout the games. Against the Bills, he was running at 18 miles an hour. That has steadily improved, but his pre-injury number was 21, he said.
"I still have some work to do in that department," he said.
09/22/16 - S Tyrann Mathieu was limited Wednesday and Thursday with tendinitis and tightness in his surgically repaired knee, although he is expected to play against the Bills. He is just not ready, it appears, to return to his former role where he plays everywhere on the field. The first two weeks, the Honey Badger has played exclusively as a deep safety.
09/21/16 - S Tyrann Mathieu is still playing mostly center field for the Cardinals instead of in the middle of the field and up close to the line of scrimmage, where he has been his most disruptive. What does coach Bruce Arians need to see out of the "Honey Badger" before putting Mathieu back in his usual role? "Quickness. Speed. And him coming to me and saying he wants to," the coach said. "That didn't happen."
09/14/16 - S Tyrann Mathieu played mostly deep in the secondary against the Patriots in Week 1. He rarely ventured elsewhere, which is typically the Honey Badger's game as he often will blitz or break things up on crossing routes underneath as well as playing against the deep ball.
He's playing a new role, he said, until he's able to ease back into his old ways following a return from major knee surgery.
"I don't necessarily like it," he said. "I'm still trying to get back in rhythm. It's a new challenge for me. I'm just trying to embrace it and accept it. I think it's more about me getting back healthy, getting comfortable. I think in the next couple weeks hopefully, I'm where I need to be and I can make that transition."
09/11/16 - S Tyrann Mathieu, who tore his right ACL last December, was back in action for the season opener. Mathieu didn't roam all over the field in typical Honey Badger fashion, though. He was used in a more conventional way as a deep safety, and he had seven tackles, one for a loss.
