Draft Scout *Devin Hester News
08/25/14 - WR/KR Devin Hester, after not catching a pass last season with the Chicago Bears, wanted to carve out a niche role in the offense.
During the exhibition season, Hester has six catches for 71 yards and two touchdowns. He caught a 31-yard touchdown against Tennessee on Saturday.
"He's a special athlete," Falcons coach Mike Smith said. "I think our offensive staff has done a very good job of identifying what his strengths are and creating opportunities for him to get the ball in his hands."
Hester caught 51 passes in 2008 and 57 in 2009. Last season, under first-year Bears coach Marc Trestman, he was not a factor on offense.
"When we signed him, first and foremost, he was a returner," Smith said. "But the very first discussion that we had, he said, 'Smitty, I want to play wide receiver. I think I can play wide receiver.' I was in complete agreement."
08/24/14 - WR Devin Hester caught a 31-yard pass touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Ryan. Hester split two Tennessee defenders en route to the score that put the Falcons up 7-0 on the opening drive of the game. Hester has recorded 27 receptions of 25-plus yards in his career, including eight touchdowns.
08/17/14 - WR Devin Hester scored his first touchdown in a Falcons uniform, catching a short pass from quarterback Sean Renfree and running 12 yards to the end zone. In his career, Hester has scored 33 total touchdowns, including 14 receiving scores.
06/01/14 - WR/KR Devin Hester is hoping to get 15 to 20 plays a game on offense with the Falcons.
He signed a three-year deal worth $9 million after becoming a free agent and is expected to handle and kickoff returns.
"A little splash here and there, about 15 to 20 plays a game, so we will see how the season turns," Hester said after being asked how much offense he planned to play. Hester said he doesn't feel like he has anything to prove to the Bears.
"You know, my stats and my play ability ... speaks for itself," Hester said. "I just have to go out and concentrate on the techniques and little things like that. I should be pretty good."
04/07/14 - WR/KR Devin Hester was signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Falcons from the Bears March 21.
