Draft Scout Shaquille Richardson News
05/12/14 - A closer look at the Steelers' picks: Round 5/157 - Shaquille Richardson, CB, 6-0, 194, Arizona...Many predicted they would draft a corner in first round. It's a big need for them and he will have a chance if he shows anything. Not very fast at 4.5, but good tackler and Ike Taylor is 34. Richardson, drafted in the fifth round, was recruited at UCLA by then-Bruins secondary coach Carnell Lake, who is now the Steelers secondary coach. - The Sports Xchange
04/29/14 - Five players who should be on Miami's draft radar: CB Shaquille Richardson, Arizona: Miami invested at the cornerback position in last year's draft, but don't be surprised when the Dolphins look to add another young piece at the position in this class. Richardson is an intriguing athlete for his size with enticing length, but is a streaky player with finesse tackling technique and undeveloped recognition skills. Richardson has some traits that translate well, but is still more of an athlete than polished defensive back right now. He's worth a late round flier and will need to prove his worth early to hold onto a roster spot. - Dane Brugler, NFLDraftScout.com
02/17/14 - 2014 NFL COMBINE SNUB: Cornerback – Shaquille Richardson, Arizona...A tall, long-armed defensive back, Richardson has an intriguing mix of size and speed, which is a very popular combination right now in the NFL. He has enough hip fluidity and foot quickness to play in space and play close to the line of scrimmage in press, but he needs to play with more consistency in coverage and vs. the run. Richardson had a positive week at the East-West Shrine practices and is a surprise omission from the Combine list. OTHER CB SNUBS: Walt Aikens (Liberty), Carrington Byndom (Texas), Marcus Williams (North Dakota State) - Dane Brugler, NFLDraftScout.com
09/07/13 - Scouting the Arizona pass defense: Arizona has a veteran five-man secondary, with all the starters returning from last season. UNLV sophomore quarterback Nick Sherry is in his second season as the starter, but he has been prone to mistakes. He was picked off 17 times last season and twice in this season's opener against Minnesota. The hint of an improved pass rush by Arizona in the opener vs. NAU (three sacks) will help the back end. - The Sports Xchange
08/12/13 - TOP ARIZONA PROSPECTS FOR THE 2014 NFL DRAFT: 3. CB Shaquille Richardson (6-1, 184, 4.54)...Tall, long-armed cornerbacks are suddenly all the rage in the NFL, and Richardson possesses the size and speed to get an extended look from scouts despite less-than-stellar overall play. His inconsistencies in coverage and as an open-field tackler, in fact, led to his losing his starting position for two games midway through the 2012 season. Richardson shows a strong initial jam when playing press as well as the fluidity to turn and run with receivers down the field. Unfortunately, missed tackles on the perimeter against quick-hitting bubble screens were a problem all year long.
Often asked to play off wideouts in this scheme, Richardson would react late to the quick passes and too frequently lunge and miss his target, capping confidence that he'd be able to transition to safety, if necessary. Richardson led the 'Cats with 15 passes defended as a junior but turned only one of these opportunities into an interception. He'd previously stood out in this area, leading Arizona with four picks as a sophomore. Richardson also comes with some off-field baggage. He wound up with the Wildcats after originally signing with UCLA out of high school and was kicked off the team in 2009. Richardson and two other Bruins were charged with theft. He was also one of 10 Wildcats and Bruins suspended following an ugly on-field brawl between the two teams in 2011. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com
