Draft Scout *Spencer Ware News
09/16/16 - RB Spencer Ware will again start in place of ailing Jamaal Charles but he missed practice earlier this week with a sprained toe. Ware had 11 carries for 70 yards and a touchdown in the 33-27 overtime win over the San Diego Chargers in Week 1. He also caught seven passes for 129 yards.
09/15/16 - RB Spencer Ware (toe) returned to the practice field for the Chiefs on Thursday, after sitting out the previous does work with a toe injury. Ware is expected to play on Sunday in Houston against the Texans.
09/14/16 - RB Spencer Ware (toe) did not practice with the Chiefs on Wednesday because of a toe injury he carried out of the season opener. The injury is not considered serious and head coach Andy Reid said Ware would be "alright for the game ... just resting him today." It would not be hard to believe Ware would be banged up after he produced 199 offensive yards while participating in half of the plays.
09/12/16 - RB Spencer Ware, starting in place of the inactive Jamaal Charles, produced 199 yards from scrimmage and a game-tying touchdown. He was the heart, power and soul of the Chiefs offense.
Ware had 70 yards on 11 carries for a 6.4-yard average. He was also the Chiefs leading receiver with seven catches for 129 yards, including a 45-yard catch and run that helped ignite the Kansas City comeback and was the longest play of the game.
"In the first half, we stopped ourselves, we didn't execute and we didn't have enough energy," Ware said of his team's first-half efforts that produced only 105 yards and a field goal. "At halftime we came in and made some adjustments and we went back out and had a great team and organizational comeback with a mentality of four quarters. It's never over. Until it shows triple zeros. You just have to keep fighting. That's what we do."
That's certainly what Ware has done in his time with the Chiefs. He entered the NFL out of LSU as a sixth-round choice of Seattle in the 2013 NFL Draft. Ware saw action in two games that year, but suffered an ankle injury that ended his rookie season. In 2014, he was twice cited for driving under the influence, although one of those charges was thrown out by a trial judge.
The Seahawks released Ware. He signed with the Chiefs at the end of the 2014 season and started last season on the practice squad.
When Charles went down in game five with his knee injury, Ware was moved up to the active roster and got more opportunities as the season progressed. He finished with 403 rushing yards and six touchdowns, and added another TD in the playoffs.
09/12/16 - RB Spencer Ware was the offensive star for the Chiefs in their overtime victory against San Diego. On 18 touches, Ware picked up 199 yards, including finishing as K.C.'s leading receiver with seven catches for 129 yards. In Chiefs franchise history, it was the fifth-most productive receiving game by a running back and the most since 2013 with Jamaal Charles and his 195 receiving yards against Oakland. Also ahead of him are Curtis McClinton (213 yards in 1965), Abner Haynes (149 yards in 1963) and Johnny Robinson (130 yards in 1960.)
