 Draft Scout D.J. Parker News
05/02/08 - Undrafted rookie free agent signed by 49ers: Parker (6-0, 198) started the final 27 games of his collegiate career at free safety for Virginia Tech. He was considered the captain of a secondary that in 2006 led the nation in pass defense (128.23 ypg) and total defense (219.46), while the entire defensive unit also led the nation in scoring defense (11.0 ppg). As a senior in 2007, the Hokies ranked third in the nation in scoring defense (16.07 ppg) and fourth in total defense (296.93 ypg). He finished his career with 144 tackles, including a career-high 59 stops in his senior season to earn All-ACC honorable mention recognition. He also forced three career fumbles and returned another for a touchdown, while picking off five passes and returning one for a score. - 49ers Media
02/08/08 - PRO POTENTIAL: FS D.J. Parker had three interceptions and was credited with breaking up seven other passes last season. His size (5-11, 194) probably will knock him down to the later rounds. He had a good week at the East-West Shrine game, which could help.
01/20/08 - East-West Shrine Week in Review: (Round Late 2, 3, or 4): S D.J. Parker (Virginia Tech): Corner size and speed, safety mentality. A lack of size may keep him out of the top three rounds. Coach Frank Beamer enjoyed his guy making a play on special teams in the game, downing a punt inside the one during the game.
01/16/08 - East-West Shrine Wednesday Practice: A bit undersized for a free safety, but Parker showed some of the better cover skills among the group today. He did not bite on a double move, staying low and transitioning well. He also displayed nice range by getting over on a deep ball and making the pick.
01/03/08 - The free safety spot is considered the captain of Tech’s defense and the Hokies have a good one in senior D.J. Parker. The Hampton, Va., native played cornerback as a freshman, but made the move to free safety and has since started 32 games at the position. He had a career-high 11 tackles at LSU and has 57 on the year. He returned a pick 32 yards for a touchdown to open the Clemson game. He also has six pass break ups and two interceptions in 2007, four for his career. - Virginia Tech Football
