 Draft Scout *Ryan Shazier News
12/12/17 - LB Ryan Shazier was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, nearly one week after he underwent spinal stabilization surgery. "Unfortunately Ryan will not be able to contribute on the field during the remainder of this season," Steelers president Art Rooney II said in a statement. "However, even off the field Ryan will continue to be one of our team leaders. We know his spirit and positive outlook will help him to continue in his recovery, as well as serve as an inspiration to our team." A Pro Bowl selection last season, Shazier was injured while making a tackle on Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Josh Malone with 11:14 remaining in the first quarter of Pittsburgh's 23-20 win on Dec. 4. Shazier hit Malone low with his shoulder pads, then immediately reached for his back while his legs remained motionless.
12/10/17 - LB Ryan Shazier, who underwent spinal stabilization surgery Wednesday after sustaining a severe back injury in the Steelers' win against the Bengals on Monday night, remains hospitalized but continues to show gradual improvement. Doctors are controlling and limiting his movement as they wait for the swelling and bruising in his back to subside, people familiar with his condition told ESPN on Sunday. A Pro Bowl selection last season, the 25-year-old Shazier spent Monday and Tuesday night at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center before being transferred to a University of Pittsburgh Medical Center facility. Since he returned to Pittsburgh, Shazier has received visits from Steelers owner Art Rooney and many of his teammates.
12/07/17 - LB Ryan Shazier of the Pittsburgh Steelers underwent spinal stabilization surgery Wednesday night on the heels of the injury he sustained earlier in the week, the team announced Thursday. "(University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) neurosurgeons and Pittsburgh Steelers team physicians Drs. David Okonkwo and Joseph Maroon performed spinal stabilization surgery on Ryan Shazier to address his spinal injury," the Steelers' statement said. The Steelers have not released any information about whether Shazier has any movement in his legs, or whether he is expected to make a recovery. A Pro Bowl selection last season, Shazier was injured during Monday's 23-20 win versus Cincinnati while making a tackle on Bengals wide receiver Josh Malone with 11:14 remaining in the first quarter. Shazier hit Malone low with his shoulder pads, then immediately reached for his back while his legs remained motionless.
12/05/17 - LB Ryan Shazier was hospitalized overnight Monday after sustaining a serious back injury, but an MRI and CT scan showed no need for surgery. Shazier, the Steelers' leading tackler through 11 games, was injured while making a tackle on Bengals wide receiver Josh Malone with 11:14 remaining in the first quarter. Shazier hit Malone low with his shoulder pads, then immediately reached for his back while his legs remained motionless. The NFL Network's Aditi Kimkhabwala reported shortly after Monday's game that the team was told Shazier had a spinal cord contusion, similar to what former Steelers QB Tommy Maddox sustained in 2002. Maddox lost feeling initially but fully recovered and only missed one game.
12/05/17 - LB Ryan Shazier of the Pittsburgh Steelers remains in a Cincinnati hospital on Tuesday, one day after he sustained a back injury in a game against the Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium. Shazier's injury will not require surgery at this time, and he will continue to be evaluated with the hopes of returning to Pittsburgh on Tuesday, the team announced. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin told reporters at Tuesday's news conference that Shazier felt good mentally, but declined to give additional information about his physical condition. The NFL Network's Aditi Kimkhabwala reported shortly after Monday's game that the team was told Shazier had a spinal cord contusion, similar to what former Steelers quarterback Tommy Maddox sustained in 2002. Maddox lost feeling initially but fully recovered and only missed one game.
