04/03/12 - The 49ers, who have selected small-college cornerbacks in the seventh round of the past two drafts, will host Northwestern State cornerback Jeremy Lane for a pre-draft visit, a source told The Chronicle. A 49ers scout attended NSUís pro day on Thursday in Natchitoches, La., where Lane (5-11, 184) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.48 seconds and had a 42-inch vertical jump. Lane only became a full-time starter as a senior, but he is projected to be a mid- to late-round pick after he flashed solid press coverage skills this past season. The 49ersí apparent interest in Lane isnít surprising given their recent history. In 2010, they selected South Carolina Stateís Phillip Adams in the seventh round. Last year, they drafted Florida A&Mís Curtis Holcomb in the final round. In addition, reserve cornerback Tramaine Brock, who finished his college career at Belhaven, an NAIA school, was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2010. Lane had 42 tackles, three pass breakups and two interceptions in 2011. In a 49-3 loss against LSU, he had a career-high nine tackles and a sack. Lane also possesses the versatility the Niners prize in their draft picks ó he was a special-teams standout who was a gunner on Northwestern Stateís punt-coverage units. - Etic Branch, San Francisco Chronicle
