12/07/13 - Alex Ross threw for three touchdowns and Lorenzo Taliaferro rushed for two touchdowns as Coastal Carolina pushed past the No. 8 seed Montana 42-35 in the second round of the FCS Playoffs on a frigid Saturday. Coastal Carolina (12-2), which survived minus-4 degrees at kickoff, will play the winner of No. 1 North Dakota State (11-0) vs. Furman (8-5) in the quarterfinals. Ross's three touchdowns came in the first half, including two to Niccolo Mastromatteo as Chanticleers scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to build a 35-14 halftime lead.
The Grizzlies (10-3) opened the second half with a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jordan Johnson to Jamaal Jones. Johnson found Jones again in the fourth quarter for a 72-yard touchdown, to pull within seven, but Coastal Carolina ran out the clock to seal its victory. 12/02/13 - 2013 BIG SOUTH OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Lorenzo Taliaferro, Sr., RB, Coastal Carolina...Taliaferro was a near unanimous selection as the Big South’s Offensive Player of the Year and is the first Chanticleer to win the Conference’s top offensive honor since Tyler Thigpen in 2006. Taliaferro finished the regular-season with Big South records of 25 touchdowns, 23 rushing touchdowns, five 3-touchdown games and 150 points. He scored a touchdown in 11 of 12 games and posted eight multi-TD efforts.
A finalist for the Walter Payton Award, Taliaferro led the Big South with a school-record 1,487 rushing yards and 1,596 all-purpose yards. The five-time Big South Offensive Player of the Week honoree rushed for more than 100 yards a League-best eight times, including 157 at South Carolina State, 144 vs. Gardner-Webb, 174 at Eastern Kentucky, 151 at Liberty and a career-high 205 at Elon. Taliaferro enters the postseason ranked second nationally in rushing touchdowns, fifth in total rushing yards and seventh in rushing yards per game (123.9). 12/01/13 - Alex Ross threw four touchdown passes to lead Coastal Carolina to a 48-24 victory over Bethune-Cookman in the first round of the FCS playoffs Saturday. Both Coastal Carolina (11-2, 4-1 Big South) and Bethune-Cookman (10-3, 7-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) are ranked, and each were conference co-champions. Coastal Carolina travels December 7 to Montana (10-2) for the second round.
Ross threw two of his TD passes in the first half, Mike McClure returned a fumble 39 yards for a score, and Lorenzo Taliaferro rushed for an 8-yard touchdown as the Chanticleers built a 27-10 halftime lead. The Chanticleers opened the second half with TD passes of 23 and 21 from Ross. Ross was 13 of 18 for 256 yards passing without throwing an interception. Taliaferro led the Chanticleers with 85 yards rushing. Brodrick Waters threw for a 16-yard touchdown and rushed for a 27-yard TD to lead Bethune-Cookman. - AP Sports
