Draft Scout *Ray Edwards News
11/12/12 - DE Ray Edwards, who had started all 16 games for the Atlanta Falcons last year and four games this season, was released by the Falcons on Monday, the team announced. The Falcons signed him in 2011 to a five-year, $27.5 million salary, but he has not fulfilled expectations.
06/14/12 - DE Ray Edwards has undergone two knee surgeries since signing with the Falcons as a free agent last season. The latest came following a 3.5-sack season last year.
The defensive end, whom the Falcons gave a five-year, $30 million contract, says he is finally healthy.
"Last year was last year," Edwards said. "Coming off knee surgery and jumping right into a full season was very tough on my body, period. I started having trouble with my other leg. No excuses, but I went out there and put my best foot forward and continued to play. This year, I'm fully healthy."
Edwards also is encouraged by Nolan's defensive scheme. He said it gives him a chance rush the passer without having pass-coverage responsibilities.
"It's a lot better because it's more us up front attacking, attacking, attacking," Edwards said. "That's the more plus thing about this defense and letting our back end play the way they play. ... Let me go. I came from a defense in Minnesota where no matter what we just rushed the front four and let the back end do their job."
03/01/12 - DE Ray Edwards, the Falcons' big offseason free-agent pickup last year, played on a bum knee down the stretch and in the playoffs.
After signing a five-year, $30 million contract, Edwards was ineffective at times last season and was not a factor down the stretch or in the playoff game against the New York Giants. He had two tackles and one for a loss against the Giants in the 24-2 loss.
Falcons coach Mike Smith revealed at the NFL Scouting Combine that Edwards needed postseason knee surgery.
"Ray Edwards, I thought did a very good job for us (against) the run," Smith said. "There was a stretch in the season that he had an issue with his knee. He had a procedure done with his knee."
Edwards also had a knee surgery in training camp and never displayed the burst off the edge that he showed during his first five seasons in Minnesota.
The Falcons hope that he can be a double-digit sack man next season. He finished with 3.5 sacks last season.
"We're expecting him to be back at full health," Smith said.
