Draft Scout Baker Mayfield News
01/20/18 - Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield appeared to call his shot well ahead of the 2018 NFL Draft. With Dolphins wide receiver Kenny Stills making an Instagram appearance on Thursday, Mayfield chimed in with the following hashtag: "#GetMeToMiami." After an initial spark over social media, Mayfield attempted to douse the flames by citing his ties with his fellow former Sooners player in Stills. "Just so everybody knows... I commented about playing for Miami because I was talking to a former Sooner in Kenny Stills," Mayfield wrote on Twitter. "Everybody can relax, I will play anywhere that gives me a chance. I'm not picky, I will go anywhere and strive to uplift a franchise and win ball games. The Dolphins, who own the 11th overall pick in the draft, dealt with quarterback issues after Ryan Tannehill sustained a torn ACL in the summer. Jay Cutler came out of retirement, but Miami failed to find its stride and finished with a 6-10 mark. Mayfield completed 70.5 percent of his passes and threw for 43 touchdowns and six interceptions this season with Oklahoma. - The Sports Xchange
01/18/18 - 2017 MANNING AWARD WINNER: Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield was named the recipient of the 2017 Manning Award on Thursday. The Oklahoma quarterback passed for 4,627 yards and 43 touchdowns this season to claim the honor, which is given to the nation's top college quarterback. It is the only award to consider postseason performances in voting by a national media panel as well as Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. Mayfield led the Sooners to a Big 12 championship and a semifinal berth in the College Football Playoff. "To say he took a different path to success would be an understatement," Archie Manning said in a statement. "I doubt there's ever been a player who walked on to two different teams and reached this level of success." Mayfield left Texas Tech due to communication issues with the coaching staff and then enrolled at Oklahoma in January 2014. He joined the Sooners as a walk-on a month later and was named the starting quarterback for 2015. Mayfield won the Manning Award over the following finalists: Ohio State's J.T. Barrett, Clemson's Kelly Bryant, USC's Sam Darnold, Alabama's Jalen Hurts, Louisville's Lamar Jackson, Penn State's Trace McSorley, Central Florida's McKenzie Milton, Oklahoma State's Mason Rudolph, Auburn's Jarrett Stidham and Arizona's Khalil Tate. Former Clemson star Deshaun Watson was the recipient of the previous two Manning Awards. - The Sports Xchange
01/06/18 - Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley says he believes Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield ranks among the all-time great quarterbacks in college football history. The numbers support Riley's claim. Mayfield is the first quarterback to finish in the top four in the Heisman balloting three straight years. He ranks sixth in NCAA history in both passing touchdowns (129) and total offense (15,402 yards) and 10th in career yards passing (14,320). He leaves as the all-time FBS leader in passing efficiency with a career mark of 176.0, topping Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford's previous record of 175.6. His mark of 190.7 in three years at Oklahoma crushed Bradford's previous school record. Only his freshman year at Texas Tech brought the overall total down.
Mayfield set the FBS record for passing efficiency in a season with a rating of 196.4 last year, then broke it with a 198.9 rating this season. Though the Sooners lost to Georgia in the Rose Bowl on Monday , Riley said Mayfield's overall accomplishments put him "up there" with the greats. "I would say how consistent and how efficient he played the position — he played the position more efficiently than anybody ever has," Riley said. "And did it for a long period of time. We're not just talking about one year. Did it with different sets of skill groups. Was a great leader." Mayfield walked on after transferring to Oklahoma from Texas Tech and led the Sooners to three Big 12 titles. The Sooners never lost in what the school calls "Championship November" with him at quarterback. "Very few guys win three straight championships," Riley said. "And the path he took to get there was a little bit obviously unconventional. Maybe a little bit tougher than most." - AP College Football
01/02/18 - Georgia linebacker Davin Bellamy had two words of wisdom for Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield following the teams' College Football Playoff semifinal on Monday. Then, Bellamy repeated those words again and again. "Humble yourself," Bellamy shouted as Mayfield congratulated the opposition following the Bulldogs' 54-48 win in double overtime in the Rose Bowl. Mayfield did not immediately acknowledge the chants of Bellamy, who apparently was perturbed by the antics of the Heisman Trophy winner. "All I'm saying is humble yourself," Bellamy told ESPN after the game. "All the flamboyancy ... I carry myself the same way, but humble yourself, man. "Our wide receivers came back and told us that they were running their routes before we went out there and he was on their line. Just humble yourself, man, just humble yourself. You're not built like that."
Mayfield has come under scrutiny for lewd crotch grabbing and other incidents, leading to him rendering an apology after the Sooners' rout of Kansas earlier this season as well as planting an Oklahoma flag in the middle of Ohio Stadium. When speaking to reporters after the game, Mayfield said Bellamy earned the right to say what he wants because his team won. "They can say what they want, they won the game," Mayfield said. Mayfield completed 23 of 35 passes for 287 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He also caught a 2-yard touchdown. Bellamy had two tackles in the win. - The Sports Xchange
12/30/17 - QB Baker Mayfield is battling a flu-like illness as he prepares for Monday's night's Rose Bowl matchup against Georgia.
Mayfield, who had been absent from off-field activities since Wednesday, initially did not show up for Rose Bowl media day in Los Angeles on Saturday, but he later appeared at his podium after he saw all the speculation about his absence.
Sooners coach Lincoln Riley said his senior quarterback was "pretty sick" when the team arrived in Southern California late Tuesday night.
"We've limited him in some areas," Riley said of Mayfield at practice. "Energy level is not normal for him right now, but nothing major as far as having to remove him or him just not being able to physically do anything."
