01/07/14 - Joe Flacco's brother taking NFL plunge...Perhaps Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco can find the complementary threat to Torrey Smith he desperately needs in his brother, Mike, who is entering the 2014 NFL Draft. Mike Flacco, a 26-year-old tight end, will enter May's draft after catching 30 passes for 591 yards and nine touchdowns, according to ESPN. The 6-foot-5, 245-pounder played just one season of college football after spending four years pursuing a baseball career in the minor leagues with the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox. Flacco has two years of eligibility remaining and is an extremely raw prospect from the 2016 class, but his athleticism will at least garner a look from NFL scouts. He is believed to run the 40-yard dash in the 4.8-second range, and NFL teams look high and low for seam-busting tight ends in the mold of Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates and Jimmy Graham, who played just one season of football at the University of Miami after exhausing his basketball eligibility.
Taking a circuitous route to the NFL is nothing new for the Flacco family. Joe transferred from Pittsburgh to Delaware, which was a Division I-AA school at the time. New Haven is a Division II program Mike Flacco joined after leaving the Orioles' system and adding 30 pounds over last offseason. He reportedly considered trying to make an immediate jump to the NFL last year, but had not played football since high school. Flacco was drafted in the 31st round of the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft and batted .253 with 21 home runs and 159 RBIs in 1,236 minor-league at bats. He reached as high as Class AA Bowie in 2012, where he managed one hit in 11 at bats. - The Sports Xchange
