 Draft Scout News
03/06/17 - 2017 NFL Combine, Saturday Losers: Derek Barnett: The Tennessee defensive end is considered one of the best pass rushers in the draft along with Myles Garrett and Solomon Thomas. But he wasnít able to showcase his physical talents at the combine because he got sick. Thatís not anything against him, because sometimes in late February/early March there are just stomach bugs running around. You travel to a place with thousands of other people packed in and you can get sick. (I just got home from Indy and my entire family has a stomach bug. I feel your pain, Derek.) - Will Brinson, CBSSports.com
03/06/17 - 2017 NFL Combine, Saturday: 8. Barnett battling sickness, may have to wait until pro day...Scouts are eager to see Tennessee edge rusher Derek Barnett work out, and not just because he recorded a NCAA-best 33 sacks over the past three seasons. Unfortunately, according to a report by ESPNís Adam Schefter, Barnett is sick and may not be able to compete in Sundayís drills. He did not participate in Saturdayís bench press. The 6-foot-3, 259-pound Barnett lacks the elite burst and bend that scouts look for as an edge rusher and possesses below-average arm length (32 1/8 inches), winning instead with a combination of strength, instincts and tenacity. Scouts are hoping he will be able to recover in time for Sundayís other measured tests and position drills. If not, they will have to wait until Tennesseeís pro day, scheduled for March 31. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com
01/03/17 - Tennessee DE Barnett enters NFL draft...Tennessee defensive end Derek Barnett did as expected on Tuesday when he announced on his Twitter account that he will make himself available for the 2017 NFL Draft. Barnett, a junior with one year of college eligibility remaining, wrote, "It has been 3 great years. I'm very thankful for getting the opportunity to play at Tennessee! Thank you all for the many memories" Barnett had 33 sacks in 39 games during his career. In the fourth quarter of the Volunteers' Music City Bowl win over Nebraska last Friday, Barnett's sack of Cornhusker quarterback Ryker Fyfe broke Reggie White's school record for sacks. - The Sports Xchange
12/31/16 - All-American Derek Barnett didn't grow up a Tennessee fan. A native of Nashville, Tennessee, Barnett knew only too well that the late Reggie White is considered the greatest pass rusher and greatest defensive lineman of all time. Now his name stands above White's in the Volunteers' record books. Barnett sacked Nebraska quarterback Ryker Fyfe with 3:29 left after coming close time and again during the Music City Bowl on Friday. His teammates mobbed him, watching their celebration on the videoboard in one end zone. Tennessee coach Butch Jones had to take a timeout to avoid a celebration penalty. With the sack, Barnett now has 33 career sacks, one ahead of White. "For my name to be in that category, it just says a lot and it means a lot to me,'' Barnett said. A junior, Barnett is expected to declare for the NFL draft next month, so time was running out for the lineman to get his 33rd sack. He kept hitting Fyfe over and over again only to see the Cornhuskers quarterback get the ball out just ahead of being sacked. - AP Sports
12/19/16 - 2016 ALL-SEC FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DL Derek Barnett, Tennessee,...Barnett earns All-SEC coaches honors for the third-consecutive season and this year's accolade marks his first time as a First Team honoree. He is the first Vol defensive lineman to earn First Team All-SEC coaches honors since Robert Ayers in 2008. He is also a finalist for the Ted Hendricks Award and a Top 20 candidate for the Rotary Lombardi Award. Barnett is enjoying the best season of his career and has secured his spot in history as one of the greatest defensive ends in Tennessee, SEC and NCAA football history. On Nov. 26, he recorded the 32nd sack of his career, tying the late great Reggie White for the most sacks in Tennessee history. On the season, he amassed 50 tackles, a career-high 12.0 sacks, 18.0 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, three pass breakups, one interception and 12 quarterback hurries. His 12.0 sacks are tied for the sixth-most in the nation and his 18.0 tackles for loss ranks 15th nationally. Barnett's 32.0 career sacks are the second-most of all active NCAA FBS players and his 51.0 career tackles for loss are tied for the most. - Tennessee Football
