Draft Scout Fred Davis News
06/22/15 - TE Fred Davis had his contract terminated by the Patriots Friday (June 19). Davis, 29, was signed by the Patriots as a free agent on May 11. He is a veteran of six NFL seasons (2008-13) with the Washington Redskins after entering the NFL as a second-round draft pick (48th overall) out of USC in the 2008 draft.
05/18/15 - TE Fred Davis, who was reinstated by the NFL the previous week, was signed by the Patriots May 11.
Davis, 29, was suspended indefinitely in February 2014 for a second violation of the league's substance-abuse policy. Davis claims he was suspended for taking a supplement. His initial NFL suspension was for marijuana.
Davis, who missed all of last season, played 72 games with the Redskins from 2008 to 2013, with 162 career receptions for 2,043 yards and 13 touchdowns. Davis had career highs in 2011 with 59 receptions for 796 yards.
05/07/15 - TE Fred Davis, suspended indefinitely by the NFL in February 2014 under the substance-abuse policy, was reinstated Thursday (May 7).
The 29-year-old Davis is immediately free to sign with clubs.
Davis hauled in 162 passes for 2,043 yards and 13 touchdowns in six seasons with Washington (2008-2013). On his best, he would appeal to clubs looking to add some pass-catching punch to the tight end position.
However, Davis is several years removed from top form. He suffered an Achilles tendon tear in 2012, and he had a disappointing 2013 campaign.
What's more, Davis has had multiple off-field incidents. In 2014, he was arrested for DUI, and he was involved in an alleged dispute with an ex-girlfriend.
02/20/14 - TE Fred Davis was suspended indefinitely without pay for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. The suspension begins immediately.
Davis, 28, is set to become a free agent in March. He previously served a four-game suspension for a failed drug test in 2011.
Davis said Wednesday the suspension stems from a supplement he took that contained a banned substance.
"In the past, I made the mistake of knowingly ingesting a banned substance," he said in a statement. "For over two years, I've worked very hard to eliminate marijuana from my life, and I have not had a positive test for it since 2011. Unfortunately, a couple of months ago I took a supplement that contained a banned substance. I now know that supplements are not regulated by the FDA and may contain banned substances.
"The NFL policy is strict, and not knowing that a supplement might contain a banned substance doesn't excuse a violation of the policy. I've worked closely with the NFLPA and NFL to resolve this violation, and I will be permitted to apply for reinstatement in the fall. I look forward to staying in football shape, remaining in compliance with the NFL policy, and having a chance to get back on the field to contribute to a team's success next season."
Davis may have limited options in the NFL. Aside from the off-the-field issues, Davis had just seven catches for 70 yards with a touchdown in 10 games in 2013. He was also slowed by injuries.
Davis, a second-round pick in 2008, has 162 career receptions, with a career high of 59 in 2011.
12/18/13 - TE Fred Davis needs seven catches to tie Bill Anderson for fourth by a Redskins tight end with 168.
