Draft Scout Matt Flynn News
08/19/15 - QB Matt Flynn signed a one-year contract with the Jets on Wednesday (Aug. 19) to back up starter Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Jets were in need of a reserve quarterback with Geno Smith sidelined for six to 10 weeks with a broken jaw.
Flynn joined his seventh NFL team after previous stops in Green Bay, Seattle, Oakland, Buffalo and New England.
The Patriots cut Flynn last week. He has a hamstring injury that will continue to restrict his practice time for about a week and keep him out of Friday night's preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons.
"I'm happy to be here," Flynn said. "I'm happy for the opportunity, and now I'm just trying to get acclimated. It's kind of been a whirlwind the last couple of days."
To clear space on the roster for Flynn, the Jets waived wide receiver Arthur Williams.
Flynn, who has thrown 17 career touchdown passes, is acclimating to the Jets and their playbook and hopes to be ready for their third preseason game against the New York Giants.
"Specifically, there wasn't any talk about what a role is, what they want out of me right now," Flynn said. "My focus has to be learning stuff -- learning the playbook, learning what the heck is going on. Watching practice today, it was different. I didn't know a lot of what was going on."
The Jets gave Flynn a physical on Friday and decided to sign him in part because of his knowledge of offensive coordinator Chan Gailey's system.
"He's been around a few places," Jets coach Todd Bowles said. "He kind of knows the system a little bit. He was the only one available, too.
"We needed a veteran right now."
When asked why Flynn would be signed now when he's not healthy enough to practice or play, Bowles said, "So he can learn the system. We wanted to get him in here so he can have a week and kind of learn and pick everything up so when he got healthy, he could just go out and try and play."
08/10/15 - QB Matt Flynn was released by the New England Patriots. The move might be tied to Thursday night's preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers and the team's need for a third quarterback. Flynn could return when healthy.
08/10/15 - QB Matt Flynn was released on Monday. The veteran signed with the Patriots in June and was on the field for the final few practices of the spring. But he opened training camp on NFI and had not practiced as the team approached its preseason opener needing to add a healthy body on the quarterback depth chart.
07/27/15 - QB Matt Flynn failed his physical with the Patriots Monday (July 27) and was placed on active/non-football injury.
06/12/15 - QB Matt Flynn, who wasn't tendered as a UFA by the Packers on May 12, was signed by the Patriots Friday (June 12).
The 29-year-old Flynn played in seven games for the Packers last season.
Flynn joins a Patriots roster that has Tom Brady and second-year player Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback, but New England is likely to be without Brady at the start of the season while he serves a suspension resulting from the Deflategate investigation.
The journeyman Flynn has spent seven seasons in the NFL with the Packers, Seattle Seahawks, Oakland Raiders and the Buffalo Bills. A seventh-round draft pick by the Packers in 2008, Flynn has played in 51 games and started seven, throwing for 2,541 yards and 17 touchdowns with 11 interceptions.
Flynn was Green Bay's backup from 2008 through 2011 and then signed with Seattle as an unrestricted free agent in 2012. A year later, he was traded to the Raiders but was released on Oct. 7, 2013, and signed a week later by the Buffalo Bills before being released again and returning to Green Bay.
In seven games last season for the Packers, Flynn completed 8-of-16 passes for 66 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.
But the Packers decided to go forward with Scott Tolzien as their No. 2 quarterback behind starter Aaron Rodgers as the start of training camp in late July draws closer.
