 Draft Scout Nathan Williams News
03/27/09 - The Bears will bring in Murray State linebacker Nathan Williams for a pre-draft visit next week. Williams is a tackling machine who led all levels of college football last season, averaging 14.9 tackles per game. Williams was the defensive player of the year in the Ohio Valley Conference and was a football subdivision, or as I prefer to call it I-AA, All-American. Wiliams, 6-1, 228 pounds, made 23 tackles in a meeting with Illinois State. He's run the 40-yard dash in 4.75 seconds, and projects as an inside linebacker. If he can move well, he might be useful as a young player on special teams. The Bears will get a closer look in a few days. - Brad Biggs, The Chicago Sun Times
12/22/08 - 2008 ALL-OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM: LB - Nathan Williams, Murray State, has been selected All-Ohio Valley Football First Team for the 2008 college football season as voted on by the league head coaches. After putting together one of the best defensive season’s in Murray State and Ohio Valley Conference history, senior linebacker Nathan Williams was named the 2008 OVC Defensive Player of the Year as well. He leads all levels of college football in total tackles and leads the FCS in tackles per game (14.92) and solo tackles. His tackle numbers rank among the best in FCS history since the NCAA officially began counting tackles in 2000. He posted double digits in tackles in nine games this season, while surpassing 15 stops in seven games. Williams also established a new single-season tackle record at MSU, breaking the old record of 160 set by Donald White in 1981. He ended his career with 396 tackles, ranking him fourth on MSU’s all-time tackle list. - Murray State football
12/18/08 - 2008 AP FCS ALL-AMERICA FIRST TEAM: Nathan Williams, senior, 6-1, 225, Murray State, has been selected AP FCS All-American First Team for the 2008 college football season as voted on by The Associated Press. Williams (Murray, Ky.) receives his second honor in the past week as he was named to the Walter Camp All-America First Team Dec. 12. The Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year and Buck Buchanan Award finalist, put together one of the finest defensive seasons in MSU history by recording 179 tackles (76 solo), 13 tackles-for-loss, eight sacks, one interception, two pass breakups, two quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. Williams registered an FCS-best 23 tackles against Illinois State. The 17 assisted tackles in that contest set a then-FCS record for assisted tackles in a game. His 179 tackles shattered the single-season record at MSU and is tied for second on the FCS list since the NCAA officially began recognizing tackles in 2000. - Murray State football
12/13/08 - 2008 WALTER CAMP FOOTBALL FOUNDATION FCS ALL-AMERICAN TEAM: LB Nathan Williams Murray State Sr., has been selected Walter Camp Football Championship Subdivision All-American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation for the 2008 college football season. Williams (Murray, Ky.) put together one of the finest defensive performances in MSU and Ohio Valley Conference history as he recorded 179 tackles (76 solo), 13 tackles-for-loss, eight sacks, one interception, two pass breakups, two quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. The Buck Buchanan Award finalist, given to the top defensive player in the FCS, leads all levels of college football in total tackles. He leads the FCS in solo tackles while also becoming the FCS active career leader in total tackles (396) and ranking second in solo tackles (208). Williams set the MSU single-season tackle record on his way to becoming just the third Racer player to earn OVC Defensive Player of the Year honors. He posted double digits in tackles in nine games this season and recorded at least 15 tackles in seven contests. Williams set an FCS season high when he registered 23 tackles against Illinois State. - Murray State football
11/25/08 - 2008 OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Nathan Williams, a candidate for the 2008 Buck Buchanan Award (given to the nation’s top FCS defensive player) overcame season-ending injuries in each 2004 and 2007 to come back for a rare sixth-year of eligibility in 2008. This year he finished the season with 179 tackles, which was a Murray State single-season record and the most at any level of NCAA football in 2008. His 14.92 tackles/game ranked first in the FCS, as did his 76 solo stops. Williams netted 23 tackles in a game against Illinois State on Sept. 13; the 23 tackles were the most in a single-game nationally this season. Williams also had a 21-tackle game, a 19-tackle game and two 17-tackle performances. He added 13 tackles-for-loss, 8.0 sacks (second in the OVC and 26th nationally), two quarterback hurries, two pass break-ups, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery during the year. Williams was named OVC Defensive Player of the Week three times during the season and National Defensive Player of the Week by The Sports Network on Sept. 17. He is the third Racer to be named the OVC Defensive Player of the Year and first since the 1995 campaign (defensive back William Hampton). - OVC Football
