 Draft Scout Joe Mortensen News
03/14/09 - Kansas Pro day: Ten teams were on hand to watch eight players run indoors on AstroTurf. LB Joe Mortensen (6-0 1/4, 240 pounds) ran a 4.71, 4.72 and 4.69 in the 40, had a 32-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot, 4-inch broad jump, a 4.25 short shuttle, a 6.96 three-cone drill and had 23 bench press reps. – Gil Brandt, NFL.com
02/08/09 - PRO POTENTIAL: LB Joe Mortensen was among the Jayhawks' leading tacklers each of the last three seasons and grew more comfortable after moving to the middle. Still a longshot to make it in the NFL.
10/31/08 - Joe Mortensen is not himself. Eight months after knee ligament surgery, there is not much he can do when an opponent who's healthier and faster runs past him into the Kansas secondary. A first-team All-Big 12 linebacker last season, Mortensen has lost a step. He knows he could have taken a medical redshirt this season and come back ready to go for 2009. He knows he didn't have to go through this. But, then again, it wasn't really about him. "It was something I chose," Mortensen said. "I love KU, I love college, and this is my senior group. I didn't want to sit out a year. I wanted to go out with them." This season has not gone as planned for Mortensen and his fellow seniors, who viewed it as a chance to prove that the Jayhawks could play with anybody. KU, now 5-3 and 2-2 in the Big 12, has taken back-to-back floggings from Big 12 South powers Oklahoma and Texas Tech. With a once-promising season hanging in limbo, there is little doubt who will take charge this week against Kansas State. "This is the time for the seniors to really step up and start really digging in and digging deep," KU senior linebacker Mike Rivera said. "When times get tough like they have been lately, the (underclassmen) look to the seniors to stay positive. We know guys are looking at us." - J. Brady McCollough, The Wichita Eagle
10/30/08 - Kansas is itching to prove its defense is more solid than the last two games when the Jayhawks were riddled by Oklahoma and Texas Tech, two top-10 opponents featuring two of the nation's top throwers, Sam Bradford and Graham Harrell. Still, the move to bolster depth seems a bit late, though Kansas coach Mark Mangino had no choice but to find additional bodies for his secondary, if only to keep starters from wilting. The lack of consistent pressure is as big a problem as coverage. QUOTE TO NOTE: "We want to win (against Kansas State) to become bowl eligible and we still have a chance to win the Big 12 North. We are stillvery optimistic about our chances this year. One game doesn't make or break you." -- Kansas linebacker Joe Mortensen.
10/16/08 - LB Joe Mortensen is treating a mild case of turf toe, which should not limit his availability against Oklahoma. Mortensen reported the ailment a week after disclosing he underwent off-season ACL surgery.
