Draft Scout Snapshot: DS Rating on 8/24/08: #4 C, #74/750 Overall, Projected Rnd: 3
2008: All-Pac 10 Conference first-team choice for the second year in a row and recipient of the Ed Moshofsky Award (team's outstanding offensive lineman) for the third consecutive season...The team captain was also a finalist for the Rimington Trophy, given to the nation's top center...Started all thirteen games, lining up at center for eleven contests and at left offensive tackle vs. Washington and UCLA...Recorded an assisted tackle in the Boise State clash...Led an explosive offense that ranked second in the nation and led the league in rushing (280.08 ypg)...Helped the Ducks lead the Pac-10 and rank seventh nationally in total offense (484.85 ypg) and scoring (41.92 ppg)...Part of a front wall that placed second in the conference, allowing 20 sacks for minus 121 yards, as Unger was charged with 2.5 of those sacks on 373 pass plays...Led the team with 90 knockdowns and seventeen touchdown-resulting blocks... Kept his string intact, as he was never penalized in a game for the third-straight season...Led the offensive line with an 86.62 percent grade for blocking consistency, earning grades of 90 percent or better in each of the Purdue, Washington and Arizona contests...2007: Selected Oregon's Outstanding Offensive Lineman (Ed Moshofsky Award) the second straight season, the first-team all-conference choice was chosen as a first-team All-American by SI.com. That was despite him making the transition from left tackle, where he had started the previous 25 consecutive games as a freshman and sophomore, to center, where he excelled in 13 starts as a junior...2006: The 13-game starter at left tackle earned second-team all conference accolades in addition to receiving Oregon's Ed Moshofsky Award as its top offensive lineman. Played a major role in Oregon finishing second in the Pac-10 in fewest quarterback sacks allowed (16) as well as leading the league in rushing offense (14th nationally) for the first time since 1955... 2005: It's not easy for a redshirt freshman to step in and protect the blind side of a quarterback but Unger did so admirably for 12 consecutive starts and did it well. Was a major reason why Oregon rose from last in the Pac-10 in QB sacks allowed in 2004 (41) to third in 2005 (20). Took part in 80 snaps or more in 10 of 12 appearances at left tackle, including 100 plays at Arizona State, to receive the team's Ironman Award following the season as the player who played the most snaps.

Post-Draft Outlook:
A closer look at the Seahawks' picks: Round 2/49 - Max Unger, C/G, 6-5, 309, Oregon...A versatile offensive lineman who can play anywhere on the line, Seattle liked Unger enough to move up in the second round, trading their third-round pick, the 68th overall, and their fourth-round pick, the 105th overall, for the Chicago Bears' 49th overall pick. - by The Sports Xchange

 Draft Scout Max Unger News
03/04/10 - C Max Unger, one of two offensive linemen, along with right tackle Ray Willis, to play every snap for the Hawks. Unger finished the season as team's starting center, with center Chris Spencer switching to right guard for the final three games of the year after trouble handling snapping duties because of an injured thumb.
12/16/09 - RG Max Unger is moving to center, and center Chris Spencer will move over to right guard, where he will split time with second-year player Mike Gibson. Coach Jim Mora is making the moves because Spencer has struggled snapping with his left hand after injuring his right thumb. The Seahawks had three botched center exchanges against Houston last week.Unger played center at the University of Oregon for two seasons before Seattle drafted him in the second round this year, and considers center his best position. Unger said that everyone on the line would have liked to stay at their positions, but because of the issues Spencer had snapping with his left hand, the coaching staff felt it necessary to make the change. "It's not optimal for really anybody on the line," Unger said about the position change. "We'd like to stay at our spots that we started at for most of the season." Unger said the line calls will be the toughest adjustment in making the move from guard to center, although Greg Knapp said part of that responsibility will be shared by quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. Knapp said one of the primary reasons for making the switch was to improve the beginning of the offensive play, which is the center-quarterback exchange, and that Spencer was struggling to consistently do that with his left hand. "It's a good opportunity for Max to play center for us," Knapp said. "I went back and reviewed for the thought of making this transition what Max did in preseason. … He played quite a bit of snaps and did a fine job, so that was encouraging to review. And this is the reason why he came, was to help compete at the center position for us." However, Unger did not get any live snaps with Hasselbeck during the three preseason games that he played in, so he will have to quickly develop a rapport with Seattle's starting quarterback.
12/14/09 - OL Max Unger could be Seattle's new center if head coach Jim Mora follows through and benches the injured Chris Spencer. Unger, a rookie out of the University of Oregon, played center in college and believes that is his best position in the pros.
10/07/09 - OG Max Unger earned high praise from coach Jim Mora, as the rookie offensive lineman out of Oregon continues to make significant contributions on Seattle's injury depleted offensive line.
09/09/09 - OG Max Unger earned the starting right guard job as a rookie, second round draft choice.
