Overall in 2007 while appearing in all 13 games, he had 17 tackles, including 3 for losses of 23 yards, plus 2 forced fumbles, 1 deflection and 2 blocked field goals. He won USC's Co-Special Teams Player of the Year Award. Suffered broken left thumb against Nebraska, then fractured a metacarpal later in season, then had to have surgery after the bowl game as it did not heal properly...2006: 13 GP; 0 GS; 9 Sol-15 TT, 1.5 TFL, 1 SK; A one-time walk-on, Matthews earned a scholarship in the fall of 2006 and served as a reserve linebacker and key special teams player as a sophomore in 2006. Overall in 2006 while appearing in all 13 games, he had 15 tackles, including 1.5 for losses of 9 yards (with a 7-yard sack). Comes from a football family. His father, Clay, was a 4-year (1974-77) letterman linebacker at USC who played on Troy's 1974 national championship team and earned All-American honors in 1977 (he went on to play with the NFL's Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons from 1978 to 1996). His brother, Kyle, lettered at safety on USC's 2003 national championship team. His uncle, Bruce, was a 3-year (1980-82) letterman offensive guard at USC who earned All-American honors in 1982 and then played with the NFL's Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans from 1983 to 2001. His grandfather, Clay Sr., was on the football, wrestling and swimming teams at Georgia Tech in the 1940s and then played in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers in the 1950s.

Post-Draft Outlook:
A closer look at the Packers' picks: Round 1/26 -- Clay Matthews, LB, 6-3, 245, Southern California...As tickled as Ted Thompson was to have Raji slide to the Packers early in Round 1, the general manager eagerly wanted Matthews to fill another missing piece in the new defensive scheme. Hence, Thompson mortgaged the rest of Green Bay's first half of the draft -- a second-round pick (No. 41) and two third-round choices (Nos. 73 and 83) -- to go up to get the all-around playmaker that is Matthews. More than having strong NFL bloodlines, Matthews is a ready-made starter at right outside linebacker with his combination of tenacious run defense, unbridled pass rush off the edge and improving coverage skills. - by The Sports Xchange

 Draft Scout Clay Matthews News
09/01/10 - OLB Clay Matthews will enter the season not having played a preseason game after he aggravated a left hamstring injury a week into training camp. Matthews, who led the team with 10 sacks and went to the Pro Bowl as a rookie last year after missing most of camp with the bad hamstring, expects to be ready for the Sept. 12 opener at the Philadelphia Eagles and start on the left side.
08/29/10 - LB Clay Matthews, the team's sacks leader as a rookie in 2009, thinks he is healthy enough to play in the exhibition finale Thursday at the Kansas City Chiefs but won't be cleared until he passes conditioning tests. Matthews had been sidelined since aggravating a left hamstring injury in the team's scrimmage Aug. 7 but took a positive step toward returning to action when he suited up for the jog-through at the beginning of practice Sunday. Matthews doesn't think he will be affected for being mentally ready for the start of the season if the team errs on the side of caution one more week and ensures his availability for the Sept. 12 opener at the Philadelphia Eagles. "I feel just from practice and some live reps I should be good to go (for the season)," Matthews said.
08/15/10 - LB Clay Matthews is expected to be sidelined another week, which will keep him out of the second preseason game Saturday at the Seattle Seahawks, because of a left hamstring injury he aggravated in the team's Aug. 7 scrimmage. Brady Poppinga started in Matthews' place at the left outside spot Saturday.
05/13/10 - LB Clay Matthews apparently didn't receive the news well that he was passed over -- a second time -- for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. The Associated Press invoked an unprecedented revote for the award May 12 after the league suspended original winner Brian Cushing, a linebacker for the Houston Texans, for the first four games of the 2010 season because of a positive drug test last season. Cushing retained the honor, though the 18 votes for him in the recount were significantly fewer than the 39 he received from the 50-member panel of media types in January. Buffalo Bills safety Jairus Byrd remained runner-up with 13 votes, and Matthews was again No. 3 in the balloting with 10 votes. Matthews previously received three votes. "10 votes?? C'MON MAN!!" Matthews wrote on his Twitter account, though he congratulated his former USC teammate Cushing for winning the award again.
01/27/10 - OLB Clay Matthews admitted his third-place finish in the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year voting in early January didn't sit well. "Of course, I'm disappointed," he said before heading to the Pro Bowl. Matthews was thought to have a solid case for the award after he led the Packers with 10 sacks and three fumble recoveries, including a touchdown return. Yet, the honors went to Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing, a college teammate of Matthews at USC. "He played an outstanding year," Matthews said. "I'm happy an ex-teammate of mine got it. I'm real happy for him. There's no doubt he should have been the winner."
