 Draft Scout Jamaal Charles News
08/26/14 - RB Jamaal Charles will not play on Thursday night against Green Bay, but said he'll be ready for the regular-season opener against Tennessee on Sept. 7. Charles is coming off a bruised foot that he suffered while moving his belongings out of the players' dorm at the conclusion of training camp. "I feel really good and I'm just trying to focus on week No. 1," Charles said. He had just five touches in the preseason.
08/25/14 - RB Jamaal Charles is not likely to play in the Chiefs' final preseason game on Thursday against Green Bay, but he appears ready to go for the regular-season opener against Tennessee. Charles dressed but did not play against Minnesota. He's dealing with a bruised foot that he suffered moving out of the team's training camp dormitory. His preseason has been three carries for 12 yards and two catches for nine yards.
08/19/14 - RB Jamaal Charles was held out of preseason game No. 2 against Carolina as a precaution after he suffered a bruised foot in an off-field misstep. Charles was moving out of the dorms at Missouri Western State University when he turned his foot stepping off a curb. It's not considered a serious injury and he should be back on the practice field on Tuesday.
08/05/14 - RB Jamaal Charles is an old-school NFL running back. The man who is the engine of the Chiefs offense as a runner and receiver is just as passionate in his blocking. "I told the running backs that this is the Jamaal Charles Rule as long as you can hold them for three seconds you're good," Charles said. "If you can't block, you can't play and that's how it goes in our room." Charles said the most important trait a running back must possess to be a good blocker is desire. "You just have to be hungry," he said. "You just have to feel like you have to knock their head off before they knock yours off. In your mind you have to have the will to do it. You've got to have the will to go out there and knock somebody out. I don't like to get hit, so I'm going to hit you before you hit me." In fact, Charles says there really isn't anything he won't do to protect his quarterback. "I'm going to hold you, hold your jersey, hold your leg, but you are not going to get to the quarterback," Charles said.
07/23/14 - RB Jamaal Charles reached an agreement on a contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday as the team reported for training camp. The team confirmed that Charles signed, though it didn't announce the terms. According to media reports, Charles landed a two-year, $18 million extension that runs through 2017. His salary over the next two years reportedly goes up by $5.1 million. The Kansas City Star reported that Charles' $8.3 million salary for 2014 will be the second-highest among running backs, trailing only the Minnesota Vikings' Adrian Peterson, who will make $11.75 million. "Jamaal is an elite player in the National Football League," Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said in a statement. "It was important for us to keep him here in Kansas City long-term." Charles was not at the Chiefs' training camp at Missouri Western State University when the players reported Wednesday afternoon but was headed there after the deal was struck. He joked on his Twitter account, "I had no intention on holding out ... I just ran out of gas on the way to camp and my cell phone battery died. It was a long walk I tell ya." Earlier Wednesday, it was reported that Charles intended to hold out for more money rather than join the team for full-squad practices Thursday. According to multiple reports, Charles was unhappy with his 2014 salary of $3.7 million, the fourth year of a six-year, $27.97 million deal signed in 2010. Charles, 28, rushed for 1,287 yards in 2013, which was the third-best total in the NFL last season, and he ran for 1,509 yards in 2012. He made his third Pro Bowl after the 2013 season, and he was selected first-team All-Pro for the second time. However, 10 other NFL running backs had a higher base salary than Charles before he reached the new agreement Wednesday.
