 Draft Scout *Ray Rice News
08/24/14 - RB Ray Rice didn't play against the Redskins in advance of his two-game suspension for violating the NFL personal-conduct policy.
07/24/14 - RB Ray Rice has been suspended for the first two games of the regular season by the NFL following his offseason arrest on an assault charge stemming from an incident with his fiancee, according to ESPN. Rice stands to lose more than $470,000 in base salary and will also be fined $58,000, per the report. Rice can practice with the team and play in preseason games, with the suspension beginning Aug. 30. He is eligible to be reinstated Sept. 12, meaning Rice will miss a pair of key home games against division rivals - the season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals and a Week 2 tilt against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night.
07/22/14 - RB Ray Rice was involved in a domestic violence incident with his wife at an Atlantic City casino. The NFL has yet to rule on his status for the season, but a potential multigame suspension is expected. "It's not my decision to make, or any of us here," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "It's in other people's hands. I'm sure there's a lot of complications making these kinds of decisions. There are many sides to every story, and there are a lot of factors. There are other people involved. "There are other disciplinary situations involved around the league. That has to be weighed in and taken into context. You're going to have to sort through that to be fair. I know the league is very judicious about that. They work really hard to do the right thing. I don't think they worry about public opinion too much. They want to do the right thing by the people involved. We'll see where it goes." The Ravens have contingency plans factoring in Rice being unavailable, including how they'll utilize reserve running backs Bernard Pierce, Lorenzo Taliaferro and Justin Forsett. What they don't know is how long Rice would be sidelined.
05/01/14 - RB Ray Rice pleaded not guilty Thursday on aggravated assault charges for allegedly punching and knocking out his then-girlfriend, Janay Palmer, at a New Jersey casino. Rice applied for a Pretrial Intervention Program, which will be reviewed by prosectors. If PTI is successfully completed, there is no record of conviction and he would avoid the stigma of a criminal record. If he is not accepted, a plea deal could be reached. Coach John Harbaugh and general manager Ozzie Newsome, in addition to Ravens teammates, have publicly supported Rice and asked that he not be judged solely on one incident while letting the legal matter run its course. Rice, who entered the courtroom Wednesday with Palmer at his side, returns to court May 29 for a status conference, at which time it will be determined whether he goes to trial or enter the intervention program. A prosecutor said there is video evidence ample enough to prove Rice is guilty. If convicted, Rice could face 3-5 years in prison.
04/30/14 - RB Ray Rice has made major progress since the end of a season in which he struggled with hip and quadriceps injuries and played at the heaviest weight of his career. Rice weighed roughly 225 pounds by the end of last season, when he rushed for just 660 yards and averaged 3.1 yards per carry, the lowest numbers since he became a regular starter. Ravens strength and conditioning coach Bob Rogucki said Tuesday that it's evident that Rice has made some improvements physically in the offseason. "He looks great," Rogucki said during an availability at the team's voluntary workouts. "I've spoken to Ray. He's doing some things differently as far as his diet and so forth. He told me he has a handle on it. "He looks good. Whatever he did from the end of the season to now, he's in a good position right now." In March, Rice's Timonium-based trainer, Kyle Jakobe of Sweat Performance, told The Baltimore Sun that Rice was down to a much leaner 210 pounds with a goal of reporting at 205 pounds for next season.
