 Draft Scout Otis Wiley News
03/29/09 - Michigan State Pro day: The workout was attended by 35 NFL personnel men representing 24 teams to watch 14 players, was done indoors on FieldTurf. Safety Otis Wiley (6-1, 212 pounds) ran times of 4.64 and 4.67 in the 40 with a 35 1/2-inch vertical and a 9-foot, 10-inch broad jump. He had a 4.34 short shuttle and a 6.97 three-cone drill, with nine reps on the bench press. - Gil Brandt, NFL.com
02/11/09 - PRO POTENTIAL: S Otis Wiley -- The leader of the secondary, Wiley had a team-high four interceptions as a senior, including one returned for a score. His work on punt returns will only increase his stock, but Wiley will likely fall somewhere between the fourth and sixth rounds.
01/01/09 - PLAYERS TO WATCH: The Spartans have been ripped by elite running backs this season, which could be a real problem again with Knowshon Moreno on the other side. Cal (Jahvid Best and Shane Vereen) and Wisconsin (P.J. Hill and John Clay) both put two backs over the 100-yard mark against the Spartans, while Ohio State's Chris "Beanie" Wells (140 yards, 2 TDs), Iowa's Shonn Greene (157 yards), Northwestern's Tyrell Sutton (139 yards) all enjoyed huge days against a porous run defense. Between Moreno and quarterback Matthew Stafford, the Bulldogs have one of the most explosive offenses in the SEC. But it all starts with Moreno. If the Spartans can slow him, they have a chance. But they have offered little proof this season they can stop an elite back. Safety Otis Wiley leads the team with four interceptions, including one he took back for a touchdown. Wiley is the leader in the secondary and a playmaker both on defense and special teams.
12/31/08 - Earlier in the season, Michigan State strong safety Otis Wiley appeared on the verge of having one of the greatest individual seasons in school history. He had four interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown, and six pass-breakups in MSU's first four games. He was on pace to become the Spartans' greatest punt returner of all time and once drew a comparison to former Chicago Bears and Kansas great Gale Sayers. In addition, Wiley was blowing up ball-carriers and receivers with savage hits. Then he injured his knee in the seventh game, against Northwestern, and his impact diminished in the second half of the season. "I sat out the Michigan game because my knee was really bothering me," Wiley said. Having more than a month to recover between the Nov. 22 regular-season finale at Penn State and Thursday's Capital One Bowl against No. 16 Georgia has done wonders for Wiley. Wiley has not been wearing a knee brace in practice and hopes to regain the form that once had some observers projecting him as a first-day NFL draft pick. "I think I'm back to where I was at the beginning of the season," Wiley said Tuesday during the Capital One Bowl player press conference at B.B. King's Blues Club. "My leg has definitely gotten stronger. "This time off to get ready for the bowl game has definitely prepared my knee to get better and train my mind to fight through the pain, and this Thursday I can definitely take a crack at it." - Steve Grinczel, Michigan Live
11/25/08 - 2008 ALL-BIG TEN CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM (COACHES): Safety Otis Wiley, Michigan State, has been selected All-Big Ten Conference First Team for the 2008 college football season as selected by the league coaches. Wiley ranks second in the Big Ten (tied with Ohio State's Kurt Coleman) and 30th (tied) in the NCAA in interceptions (4; 0.36 per game). He ranks eighth in the Big Ten in passes defended (1.0 per game; 11 total with 7 pass break-ups and 4 interceptions) and fourth in punt returns, averaging 10.2 yards. The Flint, Mich., native ranks third on the team in tackles (71) and fifth in production points (114). Wiley made eight tackles each in back-to-back games against Purdue (4 solos, 4 assists) and Penn State (6-2). He registered seven tackles in MSU's 25-24 come-from-behind victory over Wisconsin, including six solo stops. Wiley produced a season-high 10 tackles, including 1.5 for losses, against No. 12 Ohio State. He recorded seven tackles (4-3), forced a fumble and broke up a pass in MSU's 16-13 victory over Iowa. Wiley intercepted two passes and recorded five tackles in MSU's 23-7 victory over Notre Dame. He posted five tackles and matched his career high with four pass break-ups in the Spartans' 17-0 victory over Florida Atlantic. - Michigan State Football
