Draft Scout Steve Smith, Sr. News
08/10/15 - WR Steve Smith Sr., in his 15th NFL year, announced Monday he will retire after the 2015 season. Smith, 36, spent the first 13 years of his career with the Carolina Panthers before signing a three-year contract with the Ravens in March 2014. "I feel like this is the best place, if this is going to be the end, this will be the best place to end," Smith told reporters Monday. "I think it's always easier when you know you have a finish line. You get to let things loose. You just do things where you're like, 'Man, whatever happens.' You just kind of let the chips fall where they may."
02/21/15 - WR Steve Smith hasn't changed his mind about playing next season and is definitely in the Ravens' plans going forward. "I talked to Steve last week, he's excited," head coach John Harbaugh said at the NFL scouting combine. "He's planning on being back. We're planning on having him back. That's a goal of ours. I don't see any reason why that wouldn't happen." Smith caught 79 passes for 1,065 yards and six touchdowns last season and had another eight receptions for 145 yards and a touchdown in the playoffs. Smith caught five passes for 101 yards during an AFC wild-card win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, and had three catches for 49 yards and a touchdown against the Patriots. When the season ended, Harbaugh said that Smith wouldn't necessarily have to play as many snaps next season during the second year of a three-year, $11 million contract while expressing confidence that the feisty wide receiver has more good football left.
12/22/14 - WR Steve Smith had five catches for 49 yards but had a couple of critical drops for the second straight game. He credited opposing defense for making the necessary adjustments to dhuw down the Ravens. "We respect and understand and anticipate all the negative feedback and all the fat, lazy, sorry couch quarterbacks that are going to come out," Smith said. "We respect that and understand that and we're not going to pay attention to it."
12/15/14 - WR Steve Smith has surpassed 900 receptions, becoming the 18th player in league history to reach that milestone. Smith has 902 receptions for 13,123 yards. He passed Hall of Famer Steve Largent for 15th on the all-time receiving list. "Every week there's always something you need to improve on, and hey, those guys get paid, too," Smith said. "Nobody's going to come in here and lay down. You don't expect that from anybody."
12/14/14 - WR Steve Smith caught five passes for 37 yards and now has 900 receptions for his career. He is the 18th player in league history to reach that milestone. Smith missed practice with an illness earlier in the week and was listed as probable for the game. "I caught everything Joe threw my way," he said, referring to quarterback Joe Flacco. "My stamina was fine."
