 Draft Scout Hunter Cantwell News
12/24/09 - QB Hunter Cantwell was signed to the active roster to replace Jake Delhomme, who went on injured reserve with a broken finger.
06/18/09 - QB Hunter Cantwell was once viewed as the top quarterback prospect in the 2009 NFL draft. But a rough senior season at Louisville -- he threw just as many interceptions (16) as touchdown passes as the Cardinals finished 5-7 -- and a lack of overall experience knocked him off the radar and eventually landed him among the undrafted. The Carolina Panthers, always eager to take a chance on a quarterback with a strong arm, moved quickly after the NFL draft to add Cantwell as their fourth quarterback. Now, he's hoping to make the most out of that opportunity. Jake Delhomme, who like Cantwell was undrafted, called the rookie a "strong-armed quarterback with a good knowledge of the game," and said Cantwell will get his chances to prove himself this summer in training camp and in the preseason. "The thing I've always found different here is we give the rookies a chance," Delhomme said. "We truly do. And I think that's a credit to coach Fox. A lot of teams, out of 10 plays, six might go to the starter, three to the backup and one to the third guy. Here everybody gets a lot of reps so everybody is going to get a chance." With Delhomme, Josh McCown and Matt Moore returning from last season, Cantwell stands a better chance of making the practice squad than the 53-man roster.
04/30/09 - QB Hunter Cantwell, an undrafted free agent, signed with Carolina. The 6-foot-5, 225-pounder took over as the full-time starting quarterback in 2008 and completed 221 of 337 passes for 2,493 yards with 16 touchdown passes and 16 interceptions.
04/27/09 - Former U of L quarterback Hunter Cantwell, once considered a first-round prospect, was not drafted but said last night he signed a free-agent contract with the Carolina Panthers. "My agent said it would be anywhere from fourth round to free agency," Cantwell said. "I'm excited that I have a place to play. The spot is a great spot for me. It all worked out in the end." When asked if he was disappointed about not being drafted, he said: "I feel great about the situation I'm in. I would have liked to have been selected, but what we've got worked out is really good. It's a great deal for me, and I'm looking forward to playing football next year." Other area free-agent signings: U of L fullback Brock Bolen with Jacksonville, U of L receiver Chris Vaughn with New Orleans and Western Kentucky offensive lineman Greg Ryan with Baltimore. - Louisville Courier-Journal
03/31/09 - Louisville Pro day: In all, reps from 17 NFL teams attended the pro day, including New England Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia. QB Hunter Cantwell (6-4 3/8, 236 pounds) did position drills but otherwise stood on his numbers from the combine. - Gil Brandt, NFL.com
