Draft Scout Geno Atkins News
11/22/15 - DT Geno Atkins had four tackles, two for losses, and a sack, but he wasn't much of a factor in the second half. "We've got to keep working," coach Marvin Lewis said. "We've got to get sacks and rush, and all those things have got to go on one-minute drives."
10/21/15 - DT Geno Atkins missed seven games and the AFC wild card playoff game last season because of a torn ACL. He's back, and stronger than ever. Through six games, Atkins ranks second in the NFL in sacks by interior linemen with four, trailing only Tampa's Gerald McCoy. Atkins is on pace for 11 sacks this season. He had 12.5 sacks in 2012.
09/24/15 - DT Geno Atkins probably starred in a few nightmares for Chargers QB Philip Rivers this week. Atkins sacked Rivers once on Sunday, hit him three times, and caused general disruption throughout the game. When asked how close Atkins was to being a dominant force akin to two seasons ago, head coach Marvin Lewis spoke in general terms. "He's back playing football," he said. With 20 sacks the past two seasons despite a serious knee injury in 2013, Atkins is back.
08/18/15 - DT Geno Atkins started all 16 games last season, but wasn't the same player he was before the torn ACL he suffered in 2013. But now, things are different, and Atkins appears all the way back.
Said defensive tackle Domata Peko, "It's exciting for our defense. It's exciting for our team. It's exciting to have our guy back. Back at full speed. Out there balling. It just shows the hard work he put in this (off) season. It makes our defense go round. He's one of the biggest keys to our defense's success. It's great to have him back."
Of what makes Atkins so good, Lewis said, "His quickness off the football and not only that, but also it's the mental part of it. The fact he understands the offense, he understands the formations, and things that occur that they're trying to block him and run plays. He's able to take advantage of his quickness and so some good things."
10/27/14 - DT Geno Atkins, who suffered a torn ACL about a year ago, had a season-high four tackles and recorded his first full sack and forced fumble of the season. "I thought (Sunday) was probably his best game so far," defensive coordinator Paul Guenther said. "He played pretty good in the run game. He had a couple good pressures. So he's coming along good. He's really starting to get back into the Geno we need to have around here. We need him playing at that level."
