Draft Scout Geno Atkins News
09/11/14 - DT Geno Atkins eased his way back into action last week in what was his first game since tearing his ACL last year on Oct. 31. Atkins only played 56 percent of the snaps and still needed to be carted off the field for what head coach Marvin Lewis said was a dehydration issue.
09/08/14 - DT Geno Atkins left the field on a cart Sunday after the game had ended. Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said Atkins, who tore his ACL on Oct. 31 last year, was simply dehydrated and not injured.
07/30/14 - DT Geno Atkins was cleared to practice by the Bengals Wednesday (July 30).
07/22/14 - DT Geno Atkins (knee) was declared active/physically unable to perform by the Bengals Monday (July 21).
09/02/13 - DT Geno Atkins signed a five-year, $55 million contract extension with the Bengals, according to multiple reports.
Atkins can earn $31 million in the first three years of the new deal, which will also pay him $22 million guaranteed by March 2014.
"He keeps getting better," coach Marvin Lewis said of Atkins last month. "He can be in practice, and say, 'it's time to shut the offense down. Then he just dominates."
Atkins is one of the top "three technique" defensive tackles in the NFL. His contract reflects that status. Only Baltimore Ravens' defensive lineman Haloti Ngata (five years, $61 million), who signed his long-term contract in Sept. 2011, has a higher-paying deal among interior defensive lineman.
Atkins, 25, was a fourth-round pick in 2010 and had 12.5 sacks in 2012. The two-time Pro Bowl pick has 23 career sacks despite starting just one game as a rookie.
