 Draft Scout News
08/22/10 - QB Josh Freeman said he expected to be ready for the team's regular-season opener after breaking the tip of the thumb on his throwing hand during Saturday's preseason game against Kansas City.
08/22/10 - QB Josh Freeman suffered a thumb injury on his throwing hand during the first series of the Bucs' 20-15 win over Kansas City. X-rays revealed Freeman fractured the tip of his right thumb and he will not play the remainder of the preseason. However, the team said he is expected to practice and be ready for the season opener against the Cleveland Browns Sept. 12. "I was hoping it was just jammed," Freeman said, his thumb immobilized with a splint and heavily bandaged. "But it was a little different pain than just being jammed. When I saw the x-ray, they said there was a little fracture. When I heard that and saw the x-ray, I was kind of freaking out. They said, 'Hey, just take care of it and it'll be a couple weeks.' When I heard that, it made me feel a lot better." While the prognosis appears optimistic, coach Raheem Morris admitted he wasn't exactly sure when Freeman would be cleared to resume practicing. "How big of a setback? It's a team setback obviously when you lose your first quarterback," Morris said. "We're lucky. It's an injury we expect him back the first week of the season. That's very fortunate. It could be worse."
08/08/10 - QB Josh Freeman is getting better at identifying defensive coverage and changing line protections. Coach Raheem Morris was asked how much autonomy he has to change the play at the line of scrimmage. "I'm not going to sit here and tell you that he's Peyton (Manning) or Tom (Brady)," Morris said. "They can just do a drive and no coach says a word. But he's growing, and it wouldn't shock me if he's able to get there some day."
07/15/10 - QB Josh Freeman looked and sounded a lot like an experienced, intense coach when he worked with about 70 kids at One Buc Place in his first camp, the proceeds of which are going to benefit the YMCA. Is coaching in his future? "When I'm done playing football, I'd love to coach," Freeman said. "It's in me. It's part of my life. "I found myself using a lot of the same sayings and a lot of the same mannerisms that my coaches have used throughout my career," he said. "So, it's been a real productive camp. We had a great turnout and had a bunch of kids."
06/24/10 - QB Josh Freeman needed to be the best player in the offseason and he was. He took just two weeks off following the Super Bowl and returned to work in February, calling receivers and other players personally to get them to join him at One Buc Place for workouts. Freeman has worked to improve every aspect of his game, particularly become a more accurate passer and better at protecting the football. As a rookie, he threw 10 touchdowns and 18 interceptions while fumbling 10 times, losing two.
