 Draft Scout Demetrius Jones News
05/19/10 - Senior Demetrius Jones, who started at QB for Notre Dame in it's season-opener in 2007 before transferring to UC where he was moved to linebacker, chose to leave the Bearcats program in early April.
09/12/09 - LB Demetrius Jones, who made a much-publicized transition from starting QB at Notre Dame to backup QB at UC then to outside linebacker this season, recorded his first career interception against Rutgers.
09/07/09 - PLAYERS TO WATCH: LB Demetrius Jones - A former starting quarterback at Notre Dame, eased into his new role of outside linebacker, he's performed well enough to begin the season as a starter at that position. Head coach Brian Kelly is impressed by Jones' mental approach and buy-in to the switch, but will see him perform at game speed for the first time at Rutgers.
06/05/09 - After successfully moving sacks leader Connor Barwin from tight end to defensive end, head coach Brian Kelly will undertake an even more aggressive endeavor this spring - moving quarterback Demetrius Jones to middle linebacker. Jones, who transferred from Notre Dame prior to last season, has been lost in a crowded quarterback mix. Kelly has been looking for ways to exploit Jones' athleticism.
06/05/09 - The Bearcats have a new defensive coordinator in Bob Diaco, lost 10 starters from last year's squad that ranked 31st in the nation in total defense, and are switching from a 4-3 alignment to a 3-4. That said, it's certainly no surprise that defense was a primary focus throughout spring practice. "We've done a very good job implementing a system of defense that I think fits the personnel that we have," said head coach Brian Kelly. "I think we've got good depth in certain areas, in particular on the defensive line." Cincinnati allowed 321.9 yards per game last season, ranked 19th in run defense and led the Big East in sacks. Gone from last year are top pass rusher Connor Barwin, run stuffer Terrell Byrd and top cornerback Mike Mickens. In their place, Diaco has just one returning starter, but numerous players who saw action last season. Moving Barwin from tight end to defensive lineman worked so well, Kelly is experimenting again. Quarterback Demetrius Jones is moving to linebacker, wide receiver Marcus Barnett to cornerback, and tight end/fullback Marcus Waugh to linebacker. Former quarterback Craig Carey was switched to defense last season. And, it's not a gimmick. All are expected to start or contribute. Diaco told the Cincinnati Enquirer that he wanted the defense to remain fluid, and not to commit to a 3-4 scheme on every down. He indicated that the opponent, game plan and tendencies would dictate their approach. "We're going to try to do the things to keep the points down," Diaco said. "If that means rush seven, then we're going to do it. If that means drop nine, we'll do that too. It's week-to-week."
