Draft Scout Byron Maxwell News
08/18/16 - CB Byron Maxwell, who didn't play in the preseason opener at the New York Giants due to a groin problem, will play Friday at Dallas. Maxwell, obtained in a trade with Philadelphia, is expected to excel in Miami's press coverage, a technique he didn't use last year with Philadelphia.
08/14/16 - CB Byron Maxwell (groin) didn't play Friday against the New York Giants and didn't practice Sunday. Maxwell, a late scratch in the game, had his groin tighten pregame and was unable to get loose. He said he would return to practice Monday.
08/02/16 - CB Byron Maxwell, the starter in the right side, has been good early in camp, especially defending WR Kenny Stills, who he faces often in one-on-one drills. Maxwell has been seen breaking up a well-thrown pass in the end zone, stripping a wide receiver after a reception and playing solid veteran defense to shut down receivers.
03/10/16 - CB Byron Maxwell restructured his contract, the Dolphins announced Thursday. Miami recently acquired him in a trade with Philadelphia.
03/08/16 - Markdowns from former head coach Chip Kelly's 2014 offseason binge, CB Byron Maxwell and LB Kiko Alonso look to be following Kelly out the door with the Philadelphia Eagles.
NFL Network and Philly.com reported the Eagles agreed to deal Maxwell and Alonso to the Miami Dolphins, the latest in a string of major trades involving Philadelphia.
Last offseason, with Kelly manning the controls in personnel, the Eagles acquired quarterback Sam Bradford from the St. Louis Rams, shipped running back LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills for Alonso and attempted to swing a major draft night trade geared toward bringing Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota to the franchise.
Trades cannot become official until Wednesday, the start of the new league year in the NFL.
Maxwell signed as a marquee free agent and left the Seahawks for $13 million in 2015, but Miami gets a veteran cornerback without having to pay the large signing bonus the Eagles shelled out. Maxwell is due $8.5 million in 2016 and $10.5 million in 2017, including $3 million guaranteed. Kelly doled out a six-year, $63 million deal to Maxwell, who had just six career interceptions and only two seasons as a starter in Seattle before crashing free agency and cashing in with Philadelphia.
His presence could be ominous for cornerback Brent Grimes barring a pay cut.
Alonso was limited last season by a knee injury after missing all of the 2014 season with a torn ACL.
