 Draft Scout Mike McNeill News
07/22/10 - 2010 PRESEASON ALL-BIG 12 FIRST TEAM (MEDIA): TE Mike McNeill, Nebraska, has been selected Preseason All-Big 12 Conference First Team for the 2010 college football season as selected by the conference media. - Big 12 football
03/24/10 - When spring practices begin Wednesday, McNeill, a senior, will begin a new role. Coaches are calling it the adjuster. It means McNeill can play a mix of U-tight end, wide receiver and fullback. Of those three positions, wide receiver will raise the most eyebrows among Nebraska fans. McNeill, who will work this spring with wide receivers coach Ted Gilmore, tried downplaying the move. “I flexed out last year. That’s a receiver,” McNeill said. “I’m still the same person. I think I can be a solid possession receiver. If that’s four yards farther out than where I was lined up last year, then that’s what it will be.” As a sophomore, McNeill set a tight end record with 32 receptions. Last season, he was second on the team with 28 receptions. Coach Bo Pelini said Tuesday that number should’ve been higher. “Sometimes, it wasn’t a scheme thing. Sometimes, he was open, and we didn’t get him the football,” Pelini said. “We just think he’s a heck of a football player. I thought he had a chance to have a bigger year than he had, because I saw him on film, and he was open a lot. Some of it was scheme-oriented, some of it was defense dictated.” - Brian Rosenthal, Lincoln Journal Star
12/02/09 - 2009 ALL-BIG 12 HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): Mike McNeill, TE, has been selected All-Big 12 Conference Honorable Mention for the 2009 college football season as voted on by the Big 12 coaches. - Nebraska/Big 12 football
08/24/09 - TE Mike McNeill is among 30 tight ends - including five from the Big 12 Conference - on a preseason watch list for the John Mackey Award, given annually to the nation's best tight end. As a sophomore, McNeill had a Nebraska tight end record 32 catches, for 442 yards and six touchdowns.
07/29/09 - 2009 JOHN MACKEY AWARD WATCH LIST: Mike McNeill JR Nebraska, has been selected to the John Mackey Award watch list given annually to the best collegiate tight end, the award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and the 2009 John Mackey winner will be announced on December 10, 2009. McNeill had a breakout sophomore season for Nebraska in 2008. He finished the year with 32 receptions for 442 yards and six touchdowns. His 32 catches were a Nebraska tight end record, while his six touchdowns were just one shy of the school position record. He caught at least one pass in each of the final 11 games and had eight games with at least three receptions. McNeill is one of five tight ends from the Big 12 Conference on the watch list, joining Colorado’s Rian Geer, Jermaine Gresham of Oklahoma, Texas’ Blaine Irby and Jeron Mastrud of Kansas State. The Mackey Award has been presented since 2000, and eight winners of the award are currently on NFL rosters. - Nebraska football
