Draft Scout Phillip Tanner News
08/27/14 - RB Phillip Tanner was signed by the Cowboys Wednesday to handle most of the load in the final preseason game.
Tanner played for Dallas the past three seasons but got just 12 yards on nine carries last year. After the season, the Cowboys elected not to re-sign Tanner as a restricted free agent. He spent some time with the Indianapolis Colts this offseason and training camp before being waived on Aug. 20.
Joseph Randle and Ryan Williams are competing for the third spot on the depth chart behind DeMarco Murray and Lance Dunbar, but Randle has an oblique injury and Williams is fighting a groin issue.
Tanner, who made the Cowboys' roster as an undrafted free agent in 2011, also will see time on special teams on Thursday night against the Denver Broncos.

Tanner was with the Cowboys from 2011 to 2013 and rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns on 56 carries and added nine receptions for 93 yards. On special teams, he contributed 21 tackles. He became a free agent in March when the Cowboys elected not to tender him as a restricted free agent.

10/25/12 - RB Phillip Tanner is ready to start if Felix Jones can't go against the Giants, despite coming to the team as an undrafted free agent last year.
"I'm never comfortable. That's what kills you, when a guy gets comfortable and complacent," Tanner said. "I still come in every day as if I'm a free agent trying to make this team. I study film as if I've never seen it before. I take notes as if I've never read it before. Just so I can stay on my toes and won't become complacent ... So if I was good at 13 carries, I'll try to be better at 14. And on and on and on."
