News
11/06/09 - Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant said Thursday night that he will enter the 2010 NFL draft. "I feel this is the best decision for me," Bryant said. "It's what God wants me to do. I'm going to start my training Tuesday in Tampa." Bryant sat out the past five games after Oklahoma State (No. 19 BCS, No. 18 AP) ruled him ineligible for lying to an NCAA investigator looking into Bryant's offseason meeting with former NFL player Deion Sanders. The NCAA decided last week that Bryant should be suspended until September 2010, and the school appealed to the NCAA's Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee. That group announced Thursday that it had rejected Bryant's appeal in a two-paragraph statement that included no explanation. "This year didn't go the way I wanted it to," Bryant said. "It was so hard. And to be honest I had my head down at times. But the NCAA has made their decision. And I respect that. And now I've made mine." An attorney for Bryant said Thursday that the one-year penalty handed down by the NCAA amounted to a "death penalty" for his client's college career. "I don't know that there's much about this type of decision that would help improve a person," Willie Baker, Bryant's attorney, told The Associated Press in a phone interview. "I think there are other ways that the NCAA might try to develop -- a different way of administering, if you want to call it punishment or whatever, but in the end it ought to be something that would be helpful to the student." - Joe Schad, ESPN
11/06/09 - Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant is headed to the NFL. Bryant told ESPN.com that he plans to enter the 2010 NFL Draft, disclosing his intentions late Thursday after the NCAA rejected a final appeal by the school to reinstate the junior All-American who lied about contact with former NFL player Deion Sanders. Bryant sat out five games while the NCAA investigated his offseason meeting with Sanders at a Texas athletic center. Bryant admitted that he lied to an NCAA investigator about the meeting and later apologized. Bryant told ESPN.com that entering the draft is "the best decision for me" and that he will start training for the NFL combine next week in Florida. "This year didn't go the way I wanted it to," Bryant said. "It was so hard. And to be honest, I had my head down at times. But the NCAA has made their decision. And I respect that. And now I've made mine." Bryant caught 87 passes for 1,480 yards and 19 touchdowns last season while also scoring twice on punt returns. He was the only one of three finalists for the Biletnikoff Award left in school this year. In a letter to the NCAA that accompanied his request for reinstatement, Bryant had asked to be allowed to play again this season for the 18th-ranked Cowboys (6-2, 3-1 Big 12). The NCAA decided last week that Bryant should be suspended until next September, OSU appealed and the final word came Thursday from the NCAA's Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee. Bryant told ESPN.com he hopes to live up to the NFL production of receivers including Randy Moss and Anquan Boldin. "When I talk to the NFL, I'm going to be truthful with them about what happened," he said. "It will be what I'm supposed to tell them, which is the truth." - CBSSports.com wire reports
11/05/09 - All-America receiver Dez Bryant has lost his final appeal to be reinstated by the NCAA this season. Bryant has sat out the last five games for No. 18 Oklahoma State (6-2, 3-1 Big 12) after the school ruled him ineligible for lying to an NCAA investigator looking into Bryant’s offseason meeting with former NFL player Deion Sanders. The NCAA decided last week that Bryant should be suspended until next September, and OSU appealed to the NCAA’s Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee. That group announced Thursday that it had rejected Bryant’s appeal. Bryant caught 87 passes for 1,480 yards and 19 touchdowns last season while also scoring twice on punt returns. The junior is eligible to enter next year’s NFL draft. - AP Sports
11/05/09 - Dez Bryant has played his last down at Oklahoma State, his high school coach told The Oklahoman on Thursday. "He was here this weekend," Lufkin High coach John Outlaw said. "We talked for a long time. He's going to Tampa to get himself ready for the (NFL) combine." Outlaw's comments came hours after Oklahoma State and Bryant learned the NCAA had denied his final appeal for reinstatment. Bryant missed the Cowboys' last five games after being ruled ineligible. Bryant's eligibility came into question after the NCAA learned the All-American receiver had lied to NCAA officials about an interaction with Deion Sanders. On Oct. 7, Bryant was ruled ineligible for violating NCAA Bylaw 10.1, shortly thereafter he applied for reinstatement. On Oct. 13, Bryant flew to Indianapolis to meet with NCAA officials and personally ask for reinstatement. Last week, Bryant was ruled ineligible until September 2010 and OSU appealed to the NCAA's Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee. That appeal was denied on Thursday. That decision, coupled with Bryant's likely departure to the NFL, represents the end to a superb collegiate career. He had 147 catches for 2,425 yards and 29 touchdowns during his Cowboys' career. He also added three touchdowns as a punt returner. - Brandon Chatmon, News Oklahoma
10/29/09 - All-America receiver Dez Bryant says he hasn’t decided yet whether he’ll enter the NFL draft after the NCAA ruled that he will remain ineligible for the rest of his junior season at Oklahoma State. “As of right now, I’m just thinking about what’s going on right now. This is what I’m focused on,” Bryant told ESPN in an interview taped in Dallas on Wednesday. “I’m just going to let all that take care of itself. God’s got the best decision for me and I’m going to go from there.” Bryant has missed the last four games for the 13th-ranked Cowboys (6-1, 3-0 Big 12) after being declared ineligible by the school for lying to an NCAA investigator looking into Bryant’s offseason meeting with former NFL player Deion Sanders. Oklahoma State has appealed the decision to an NCAA reinstatement committee and expects a decision as early as next week. The Cowboys host No. 3 Texas (7-0, 4-0) on Saturday night in a game featuring the only Big 12 teams unbeaten in conference play. “I’m disappointed, but at the same time, I respect the NCAA’s decision and I also thank Oklahoma State for appealing,” Bryant said. A top NFL prospect, Bryant caught 87 passes for 1,480 yards and 19 touchdowns last season while also scoring twice on punt returns. This season, Bryant led the team with 17 catches for 323 yards and four touchdowns through OSU’s first three games. He could enter next year’s NFL draft, where he has been projected as an early first-round pick. He has asked the NCAA to reinstate him by the end of the season, but told ESPN he doesn’t know how the appeal process will go. “They might go my way, they may not,” Bryant said. “But at the same time, I’m going to respect whatever happens. I’m just going to move forward.” An interview request for Bryant through Oklahoma State was denied. - AP Sports
