 Draft Scout John Clay News
05/19/10 - If you look at the Football Bowl Subdivision statistics from 2009, there's not much separating Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram from Wisconsin junior tailback John Clay. Ingram, the Alabama junior-to-be, finished 11th nationally in rushing yards per game (118.4) last fall and delivered 17 touchdowns in 271 carries. Clay finished 12th in rushing yards per game (116.7) while posting 18 touchdowns in 287 carries. Clay enters his redshirt junior year with 2,401 career yards and 27 touchdowns in 442 carries.
03/10/10 - Standout running back John Clay will sit out spring practices for the University of Wisconsin football program after undergoing surgery to repair recurring pain in his ankles, coach Bret Bielema said Wednesday. "The thing that excites me about his injury is I think (the surgeries will) give him relief, allow him to become a better football player," Bielema said. Clay, who rushed for 1,517 yards last year as a sophomore - ranking him eighth nationally - is expected to be "in full swing" by the start of summer conditioning on June 7. The reigning Big Ten Conference Offensive Player of the Year is in full rehabilitation mode, with conditioning in a swimming pool four days per week at 5 a.m., Bielema said. Ankle injuries have hampered Clay ever since high school, and he pondered undergoing the surgeries prior to last season as well. - Madison Sports
02/17/10 - RB John Clay, the Big Ten's reigning Offensive Player of the Year, underwent ankle surgery and could miss some, if not all, of spring ball. That'll give guys like senior Zach Brown and sophomore Montee Ball the opportunity for more carries.
12/29/09 - PLAYERS TO WATCH: TB John Clay - The Big Ten's offensive player of the year is the linchpin to Wisconsin's pro-style offense. The redshirt sophomore trampled his way to a league-best 1,396 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground during the regular season.
12/29/09 - CHAMPS SPORTS BOWL, MATCHUP TO WATCH: TB John Clay vs. OLB Colin McCarthy and MLB Darryl Sharpton: The Big Ten's Offensive Player of the Year led the league with 1,396 yards and 16 touchdowns. Much of his best work came between the tackles, where his massive line would carve out a crease and he used his power and speed to do the rest. It'll be up to McCarthy and Sharpton, a pair of second-team all-ACC selections, to fight off the Badgers blockers at the second level and team up to bring down Clay.
