 Draft Scout News
07/01/10 - OL Maurkice Pouncey has been mentioned by multiple outlets as a candidate to move to right tackle, but the Steelers want him to play inside. Pouncey, an All-American center at Florida, could play any of the three interior OL positions. He wouldn't necessarily be ill-fitting at right tackle as a replacement for Willie Colon (Achilles), but the Steelers like him better as an inside guy.
06/24/10 - OL Maurkice Pouncey, the team's top pick, grasped things quickly as he competes to start at right guard, and there's an outside chance he could start at center.
06/17/10 - OL Maurkice Pouncey, who has practiced at center and right guard. "I think that he has proven to be mature beyond his years," coach Mike Tomlin said. "His level of football maturity probably exceeds that of some 20-year-old first-round picks that we have had of recent years, like Lawrence Timmons and Rashard Mendenhall. He's got good football maturity. It's been a pleasant surprise. He's been comfortable at guard and center."
06/03/10 - OL Maurkice Pouncey, the Steelers' No. 1 draft choice, has been taking snaps mostly at right guard this spring, but with two centers out one day, he moved to center. Could he win that job from starter Justin Hartwig? Perhaps, if he's a quick study. The Steelers drafted Pouncey as their center of the future. Hartwig has been average at best and after having post-season clean-up shoulder surgery, he has been limited in spring drills. Undrafted free agent Doug Legursky has been running with the first team all spring and guard Kraig Urbik has also been playing center. The right guard position is wide open and the Steelers figured Pouncey could play there as he eases into the job at center. "Nowadays in the NFL most teams dress seven linemen on game day," said new offensive line coach Sean Kugler "So, if you're not in the starting five and you are one of the backups, you have to play two positions." At right guard, Pouncey's competition includes holdover starter Trai Essex, Urbik and Ramon Foster. Essex, who also can play tackle, took over the job in training camp last year after Darnell Stapleton had knee surgery. Stapleton was not re-signed and remains a free agent. Pouncey remains a long-shot to start at center as a rookie, but it's not a stretch. "We've been working him at center and guard," Kugler said. "He's been taking reps at two different groups. That will be the plan with Maurkice, continue to work him at guard and center. He's a player we feel can play both."
05/03/10 - C Maurkice Pouncey (1/18), Florida: For three decades, the Steelers anchored their offensive line with great centers like Mike Webster, Dermontti Dawson and Jeff Hartings. They've lost that and they believe Pouncey can start the next era, although he'll start out at right guard in 2010.
