 Draft Scout Bilal Powell News
01/09/13 - RB Bilal Powell teamed up with Shonn Greene, who gained 1,000 yards for the second straight season, to form a solid, if unspectacular, running back by committee. The duo collected exactly 1,500 yards and were the lynchpins to wins over the Cardinals and Jaguars. But Greene is a free agent and the Jets are likely to look for an upgrade on a plodder who averaged a career-low 3.9 yards per carry in his age-27 season. Powell probably isn't a true no. 1 back, but he proved to be an excellent third-down back and has a little more juice in his legs than Greene, so he could serve as a three-down back if the Jets want to reallocate some of their few free agent bucks elsewhere.
12/28/12 - RB Bilal Powell enters the season finale with 98 carries. With two carries on Sunday, the Jets will have two running backs with at least 100 carries for the third time in Coach Rex Ryan's four years at the helm. Thomas Jones (331 carries) and Shonn Greene (108 carries) each exceeded 100 carries in 2009 while LaDainian Tomlinson (219 carries) and Greene (185 carries) each had at least 100 totes in 2010.
12/26/12 - RB Bilal Powell had his worst rushing game of the season in the Jets' 27-17 loss to the Chargers on Sunday, when he rushed for negative-3 yards on three carries. But he set career highs with four catches for 37 yards and, as the Jets' passing down back, actually played more snaps (31) than starter Shonn Greene (30) because of the Jets' inability to establish the run.
12/17/12 - RB Bilal Powell (toe) increased his practice participation last week and was expected to once again share carries with Shonn Greene on Monday night against the Titans. Powell set a career high with 19 carries for 78 yards in the 17-10 win against the Jaguars Dec. 9.
12/14/12 - RB Bilal Powell (toe, shoulder) sat out practice Thursday with what coach Rex Ryan believed to be a fractured toe. Powell didn't appear to be hurt against the Jaguars, against whom he scored a touchdown while setting career highs with 19 carries for 78 yards in helping the Jets to a 17-10 victory. Ryan said he hoped Powell would be available against the Titans on Monday. Powell missed two games earlier this season with a separated shoulder.
