 Draft Scout Bilal Powell News
10/21/15 - RB Bilal Powell (ankle) didn't practice Wednesday. Powell was injured Sunday, when he was limited to minus-2 yards on four carries and one yard on one reception. If Powell cannot play, lead back Chris Ivory will likely see more work on third downs and in obvious passing situations.
10/18/15 - RB Bilal Powell was active although he was listed as a game-time decision with a groin injury. He was injured again when he sprained his ankle during the first half.
03/11/15 - RB Bilal Powell re-signed with the New York Jets Tuesday (March 10). Powell was one of the first players new head coach Todd Bowles called in January when he was hired to replace Rex Ryan. He was set to become an unrestricted free agent. Powell was effective when he saw the field but was largely behind running backs Chris Ivory and Chris Johnson, whose option wasn't exercised, in the team's rotation and had only 33 carries for 141 yards in 2014. Powell, 26, was a fourth-round pick in 2011. The Buffalo Bills, now coached by Ryan, were reportedly targeting Powell in free agency. In 2013, when Powell started 11 games, he rushed 176 times for 697 yards (4.0 yards per carry).
03/08/15 - RB Bilal Powell, unrestricted FA update, was overused in 2013, when he wore down late in a 212-touch season, and underused last year, when he collected just 44 touches. His optimal usage, of course, is somewhere in the middle, and there's indications the Jets believe there can be a role for Powell on the 2015 roster. He's not an every-down back, but as an adequate runner and terrific blocker with a reliable set of hands; he's able to play in any situation. Powell's less-than-imposing resume should make it easier for the Jets to retain him on a team-friendly deal.
11/26/14 - RB Bilal Powell (illness) was a late scratch for the Jets prior to their 38-3 loss to the Bills on Monday night. Rex Ryan said following the game that Powell began to feel sick about two hours before the Jets' bus headed to Ford Field. Powell worked out before the game but was dizzy and couldn't get clearance. The illness snapped Powell's consecutive games played streak at 34.
