Draft Scout Bilal Powell News
09/20/13 - RB Bilal Powell (illness) was a full participant in practice Thursday, a day after missing practice entirely. He is expected to play his usual role when the Jets host the Bills on Sunday. Powell, who has served thus far as the JetsO lead back over Chris Ivory in a running back by committee, has rushed 25 times for 77 yards and a touchdown and caught six passes for 57 yards.
09/18/13 - RB Bilal Powell (illness, shoulder) did not participate in practice on Wednesday. Powell was listed as a full participant in practice with the shoulder injury the first two weeks but coach Rex Ryan said Wednesday he missed practice solely because of the illness. Through two games this year, Powell has 77 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries and six catches for 57 yards.
08/20/13 - RB Bilal Powell appeared to be on the roster bubble when the Jets signed Mike Goodson in March and traded for Chris Ivory in April. But with Goodson yet to report this summer due to personal reasons and Ivory battling a hamstring injury that sidelined him for most of training camp, Powell emerged as the Jets' best -- and, more importantly, most reliable -- running back. Powell bounced back from a subpar performance against the Lions by rushing for a game-high 68 yards on just seven carries against the Jaguars on Saturday. At the very least, Powell seems likely to have earned a timeshare role similar to the one he had last year, when he was paired with Shonn Greene in the second half of the season. At most, the Jets might have a sneaky every-down back candidate in Powell, who is solid as a pass-catcher and as a blitz protector.
08/08/13 - RB Bilal Powell's roster spot seemed endangered when the Jets traded for Chris Ivory and signed Mike Goodson, but with Ivory hurt and Goodson nowhere to be found, Powell has re-established himself as a contender for carries in the backfield. Powell had six rushes for 41 yards in the Green-White Scrimmage on Saturday. He's not a Pro Bowl talent, but with his ability to pass protect and catch passes out of the backfield, the Jets could certainly do much worse come September if Ivory is still banged up.
01/09/13 - RB Bilal Powell teamed up with Shonn Greene, who gained 1,000 yards for the second straight season, to form a solid, if unspectacular, running back by committee. The duo collected exactly 1,500 yards and were the lynchpins to wins over the Cardinals and Jaguars. But Greene is a free agent and the Jets are likely to look for an upgrade on a plodder who averaged a career-low 3.9 yards per carry in his age-27 season. Powell probably isn't a true no. 1 back, but he proved to be an excellent third-down back and has a little more juice in his legs than Greene, so he could serve as a three-down back if the Jets want to reallocate some of their few free agent bucks elsewhere.
