Draft Scout *Muhammad Wilkerson News
08/09/16 - DE Muhammad Wilkerson (broken right leg) was activated off the physically unable to perform list Tuesday, and he participated in practice with the Jets for the first time this summer. Coach Todd Bowles did not rule out playing Wilkerson in Thursday's preseason opener against the Jaguars, although it is more likely than not that Wilkerson sits until at least the second exhibition game. Wilkerson broke his leg in the 2015 season finale.
07/28/16 - DE Muhammad Wilkerson was placed on the physically unable to perform list, but it was an expected move because he is recovering from a broken right leg. Wilkerson was injured in the third quarter of the Week 17 loss in Buffalo, and since the rehab time for his surgically repaired knee was six months, the team wants to be cautious in the early portions of camp. Wilkerson signed a five-year, $86 million contact on July 15 and said he would be ready for Week 1.
07/21/16 - DE Muhammad Wilkerson vows to be ready for Week 1 of the 2016 season.
Wilkerson, who broke his right leg in Week 17 last season, is still rehabbing and the team wants to be cautious in the early stages of camp.
"Yeah, I'll be ready for Week 1," he said on a conference call scheduled for the Pro Bowl edge defender to discuss his five-year, $86 million contract, which was signed July 15.
03/01/16 - DE Muhammad Wilkerson was tagged as the franchise player by the Jets Tuesday (March 1) with a tender worth $15.701 million.
01/15/16 - DE Muhammad Wilkerson will be sidelined approximately six months after recent surgery to repair his broken right leg. Wilkerson broke his right fibula in the season-ending loss to the Buffalo Bills. He underwent surgery to repair the break and the team finally released a timetable for his recovery on Thursday.
Complicating the situation for both parties is that Wilkerson is slated to become an unrestricted free agent. The Jets can prevent that by placing the franchise tag on him if they can't sign him by the March 1 deadline.
General manager Mike Maccagnan is expecting to work something out with Wilkerson.
"The simple answer is yes," Maccagnan told reporters. "We'd very much like to have Muhammad back in the organization."
The two sides attempted to negotiate a long-term contract prior to last season but couldn't reach an agreement. Wilkerson played for $6.97 million in 2015 and posted a career-best 12 sacks.
