Draft Scout *Muhammad Wilkerson News
12/25/13 - --DE Muhammad Wilkerson was named the Curtis Martin Most Valuable Player in balloting conducted by Jets players. Wilkerson has solidified his reputation as one of the best defensive players in football this season by collecting 10.5 sacks, 62 tackles, two forced fumbles and one interception through 15 games. Wilkerson is the fifth straight defensive player to win the award but the first member of the defensive line to earn team MVP honors since John Elliott in 1970.
11/04/13 - Jets coach Rex Ryan used to rave about individual players. But that was before Darrelle Revis' agents used Ryan's words against the Jets in contentious contract negotiations in 2010 and before Idzik, who preaches "team" instead of "me," took over as general manager in January.
But the old Ryan appeared briefly Sunday when he couldn't help but rave about Muhammad Wilkerson after the defensive end had yet another stellar game in the Jets' 26-20 win over the Saints.
Technically, Ryan wasn't explicitly referring to Wilkerson when he said the Jets "may have the best defensive player in the league right now." But he left no doubt as to Wilkerson's identity when he tried to sidestep his comments on Monday.
"He's pretty good," Ryan said Monday, "But see, I'm not supposed to say that."
No worries. Wilkerson's performance on the field is doing all the talking this year.
Wilkerson recorded a sack for the fifth straight game, had two quarterback hits and nearly made an acrobatic interception off a tipped ball on Sunday. He leads the Jets with 8.0 sacks and 22 quarterback hurries and is establishing himself not only as a sure-fire All-Pro -- an honor he feels he should have received last year -- but also as a candidate for Defensive Player of the Year honors.
"He's decent, he's got some positive stuff to him," Ryan said, tongue planted firmly in cheek. "I slipped that (compliment on Sunday) out. He's a heckuva football player, there's no question about that. He played the run, (played the) pass smart. You see it all from him."
10/28/13 - --DE Muhammad Wilkerson recorded a sack for the fourth straight game on Sunday, when he took down the Bengals' Andy Dalton in the second quarter of the Bengals' 49-9 win. That was the only sack and only quarterback hit recorded by the Jets in the lopsided defeat. Wilkerson leads the Jets with seven sacks and 19 quarterback hits this year and has 11 sacks in his last 15 games dating back to last season.
10/23/13 - --DE Muhammad Wilkerson continued his red-hot play on Sunday, when he had one sack, one quarterback hit and five tackles in the Jets' 30-27 win over the Patriots. Wilkerson, who sacked Tom Brady in the third quarter, has a sack in each of his last three games and leads the Jets with six sacks and 18 quarterback hits this season. He has 10 sacks in his last 14 games dating back to last season.
10/02/13 - DE Muhammad Wilkerson was fined $15,785 by the NFL on Wednesday for the hit that injured Titans quarterback Jake Locker in the third quarter of the Jets' 38-13 loss on Sunday. CBSSports.com reported the fine as well as Wilkerson's plans to appeal it. Wilkerson hit Locker in the chest a moment after he threw the ball and Locker fell to the ground with a sprained right knee and right hip, injuries that will likely sideline him for a month. Wilkerson told reporters Sunday night that he believed the hit was a legal one while Locker said Wednesday that he didn't believe Wilkerson should be fined.
