 Draft Scout Jon Amaya News
06/24/10 - S Jonathan Amaya made a strong impression on coach Tony Sparano this offseason with his ability to make plays on the ball with a steady dose of interceptions. Amaya was signed out of Arizona where he notched 83 tackles his senior season, partly because of his physical style. He should make the team as a backup strong safety to Yeremiah Bell and special teams contributor.
12/24/09 - HAWAII BOWL, MATCHUP TO WATCH: Can Nevada slow down the SMU passing attack? While not as prolific as the passing attacks that June Jones coached at Hawaii, SMU has firepower in the passing game. Stopping the pass has been one of Nevada's downfalls this season. PLAYERS TO WATCH: S Jonathon Amaya - The senior led Nevada with 12 tackles against Boise State and completed the regular season with a team-high 83 tackles. Amaya led Nevada with eight pass breakups as well.
12/07/09 - 2009 ALL-WAC SECOND TEAM (COACHES): DB-Jonathon Amaya, Sr., Nevada, has been selected Second Team All-Western Athletic Conference for the 2009 college football season as voted on by the WAC head coaches. - Nevada/WAC football
11/16/09 - WAC WEEK 11 DEFENSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Nevada safety Jonathon Amaya, a senior from Diamond Bar, Calif. (Diamond Bar HS), recorded a team-high eight tackles (5 solo), including one for a loss, and forced a fumble in Nevada's 52-14 win over Fresno State. The forced fumble stopped a Bulldog drive late in the third quarter at Nevada's 10-yard line. Amaya's play during the game helped hold the nation's fifth-best rushing offense to just 112 yards, 138 below their average entering the contest. Also nominated on defense: senior cornerback Kyle Wilson, Boise State; senior linebacker Blaze Soares, Hawai'i; sophomore linebacker Adrien Cole, Louisiana Tech; junior defensive back Davon House, New Mexico State; and junior safety Rajric Coleman, Utah State. - WAC football
09/25/09 - SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: Nevada is giving up far too many big plays defensively to be successful. The Wolf Pack has allowed six touchdowns of 25 yards or more already this season. Opponents are completing 68.3 percent of their passes against Nevada and have thrown seven touchdowns. Nevada, which averaged three sacks per game last year, has two sacks through two games.
